The rose of the world was breathing out smell. It followed her through all her waking moments and caressed her in her sleep. It connected itself with other vaguely felt matters that had struck her outside observation and buried themselves in her flesh. Now they emerged and quested about her consciousness.

Just as 17th-century artists could exploit characteristics to sell prints, modern musicians can exploit streaming algorithms' preferences. Taylor Swift seems to know how to game the system by understanding what the algorithm "hears." She started her career by using Tim McGraw's name to encourage listeners to hit play, borrowing the strength of his reputation to garner interest in her songs. Today, by working with sonic similarities, she is still building on the reputation of other artists by introducing her work into unexpected playlists. Play The Pixies Radio, and Actually Romantic may appear. Load your funk-infused Daylist, and Wood may show up. I fully expect Opalite to make it into my Broadway mixes, but can't tell you exactly why! This is how folks who don't like Taylor Swift wind up liking Taylor Swift—it's hard to maintain that you don't like her music when it's sonically similar to music you obviously appreciate.|

I just read June’s new book. It’s either her or one of us. The way she plays with symbols and our particular metatexts is too complex for someone who’s not read into our universe (or, ew, AI) to replicate. This book was my favorite, by the way.

I especially loved this poem:
supernova by june bates It can't all be sunshine and rainbows. Grey skies are coming our way. And I'm not going to lie to you: It's going to rain and it's going to rain hard. You're going to be wondering: Is it even worth it to step out-side? What if I get wet? What if? What if? I check the weather twice a day and it's always saying some shit like: The future looks bleak so maybe we should take away people's right to see sunshine and rainbows because really the rain isn't the problem; the problem is you remembering there are other ways to exist.

So, when our culture imagines a celebrity's coming out, it expects an Ellen-style announcement that will submerge the past life in phoenix fire and rebirth the celebrity in a new image. In an ideal culture, wearing a bracelet that says "PROUD," waving a pride flag onstage, placing a rainbow in album artwork or suggestively answering fan questions on Instagram would be enough. But our current reality expects a supernova.

Even in 2023, public discussion about the romantic entanglements of Ms. Swift, 34, presumes that the right man will "finally" mean the end of her persistent husbandlessness and childlessness. Whatever you make of Ms. Swift's extracurricular activities involving a certain football star (romance for the ages? strategic brand partnership? performance art for entertainment's sake?), the public's obsession with the relationship has been attention-grabbing, if not lucrative, for all parties, while reinforcing a story that America has long loved to tell about Ms. Swift, and by extension, itself.
