Just as 17th-century artists could exploit characteristics to sell prints, modern musicians can exploit streaming algorithms' preferences.
Taylor Swift seems to know how to game the system by understanding what the algorithm
"hears." She started her career by using Tim McGraw's name to encourage listeners to hit play, borrowing the strength of his reputation to garner interest in her songs. Today, by working with sonic similarities, she is still building on the reputation of other artists by introducing her work into unexpected playlists.
Play The Pixies Radio, and Actually Romantic may appear. Load your funk-infused Daylist, and Wood may show up. I fully expect Opalite to make it into my Broadway mixes, but can't tell you exactly why! This is how folks who don't like Taylor Swift wind up liking Taylor Swift—it's hard to maintain that you don't like her music when it's sonically similar to music you obviously appreciate.|

Another date I’m watching: 16th of October. Marie Antoinette died on that day, the crowd was her king… but not in a way that went down well for her.
