I had completely forgotten about Jazzmatazz. I loved that album. Reminds me of revising for my finals.

Flights were slightly cheaper than the following week but there wasn’t a huge difference.

We have five weeks next. Flying away in Mar 30th.

I have failed at #FridayFive this week. I’m sorry.

The bar has been very low! Wonder what treat we have in store next?

Genuinely though - it’s such a lovely school. Very unique in our approach with no uniform and first name terms. It’s just nice.

It’s definitely not the building!

A recent ‘spotted’ post on FB said that the school was ‘run by a bunch of hippies’. Maybe that’s it?

We had 14 employable applicants! Unheard of!

Absolutely. One of our teachers went to interview this week where they were told ‘if you don’t hear back from us by 4pm, you have been unsuccessful’! Not even a phone call? Luckily she got the job and accepted as she loved the school (relocation). However, she said this was a bit of a red flag!

Anyway, as I said- I’m excited about today. Maths interviews are my favourite.

5. I have had many, many interviews over the years and used to be terrrifed. Now, I am very relaxed about them as they are definitely a two way process. Interviews should also be used by candidates to see if it’s a places they would be comfortable working.

4. Obviously we discuss the lesson in the interview where they can talk through things they may not have had time to do. Many candidates don’t realise that the point of the observation is to see how they engage with the students, not necessarily the lesson content (although that’s important too).

3. The lesson observation is the most important part. However many candidates are worried that they only have 25 minutes and that they won’t get through the content. I tell them ahead of time that it doesn’t matter if they don’t get through their content and that I will stop them after 25 minutes.

2. Being good in interview doesn’t equate to being a good practitioner. I generally ask trusted specialists to do observations in pairs and we convene after the interview (so there’s no bias during the interview). Although we often align there are times when we have completely opposite rankings!

We have had several interview days recently. Here are a couple of thoughts.

1. I will now always send out questions ahead of the interview. This makes the conversation flow much more naturally and avoids those painful silences that I’ve experienced so many times in the past.
