But I think the conclusion here is really off-based and something that I hope doesn’t become the common take away.
The lesson here is clear: We’re on our own now. They have guns and drones and they can hack our phones and smear our names online and arrest us without a warrant and charge us with terrorism. And all we have are whistles and protests and TikTok and group chats and maybe some journalism. Our local leaders are admitting they can’t help us. So we’re left with nothing but hope that all of that will be enough. But it’s impossible to shake the profoundly unsettling feeling that we have clearly stepped across the threshold into a very different political reality. And it’s not a matter of if it arrives in your town, but when.

The basic sequence of the ICE shooting in Minneapolis on Wednesday is not in dispute: A Honda Pilot reversed, then moved forward; an ICE agent was close to the vehicle; the agent fired shots. A 37-year-old woman was killed. But that sequence has been interpreted in radically different ways. Was the officer struck by the vehicle, as President Trump insists, or did the car pass by or around him? Was he positioned in front of the vehicle or to the side? Did he have a genuine, reasonable fear for his life in that moment, or did he create the very danger he then used lethal force to escape?

It worked – for a term. Fast forward 6 years, Santa sees it’s gotten so much worse and is no longer fucking around. A friend asked me to send a voicenote for their podcast about what my prediction for 2026 is and this is what I said. It is going to happen this year. You know what I mean. God’s will. Naturally of course. No need to come knocking on my door. I’m chilling at home and I’ll be chilling at home when it happens. Before I go running out into the streets that is. Shaking the mailman’s hand. Kissing nurses and shit. All of a sudden there’s a drumline and a mariachi band and breakdancers and fuckin… David Guetta is DJing on a rooftop if David Guetta is still alive. Maybe we’ll even get to watch it live on TV. The first flicker that something is really wrong. Slowing it down and rewinding it after like when Lisa broke Ralph’s heart. The realization in his eyes. The first single moment of self awareness in 80 years. Like a flailing panicked deer you’ve crashed your car into on the side of a snowy mountain pass. The eyes fluttering back and forth. Surely this can’t have been it. Perhaps a brief bargaining with God. God saying he’s going to pass on the deal. I do not agree with your terms sir. It’s gonna be like the Will Smith Summertime video out there. Everywhere. We’re all going to get fired from our jobs for posting. 100% unemployment. One good day.

Hear me out: When we look honestly at the state of the world, it's hard not to feel crushed. Many of us channel our grief and rage into structural work: building alternatives, organizing resistance, loving and tending to each other as best we can. But our ability to do so is shaped by the contexts in which we find ourselves: the freedom to protest, the resources to build, the degree to which communities must overcompensate for systems that neither love nor tend to us, these are all hugely uneven. Those living in wealthy nations, even if they oppose the violence carried out in their name, still benefit from their governments' pillage. And even when they protest, too little changes too slowly. The systems of extraction are global, but our pathways for repair are not.

This also gets at a conversation I was just having with @dceiver.bsky.social @raf.bsky.social - albeit tangentially related to creativity and intelligence and the necessity yet rarity of integrity and character to go with them.
I resonate with much of this, particularly the bit about an awareness of limitations. Unlike Sara, I am not an artist, or at least I would not claim that title for myself. But I, too, want to articulate something convincing about what it feels like to be a human being. This is, I think, one of the great needs of the moment. Art will do this best, I concede. But perhaps there’s still something worth saying in another register. After all, it has long been my contention that the question of technology, pursued to any depth, simply becomes the question of the human. So, this is what I will continue to attempt: to put before us the claim, articulated long ago in Lear, “Thy life is a miracle. Speak yet again.”
