It seems that the app is particularly glitchy when using bulk commands, after I bulk restored all (soft) deleted notes it jumped to the group underneath "Recently deleted", which happened to be an empty smart folder. Again, WTF!

As I said, "complicated history" is an understatement.

The only thing that my father managed to get from him is that his group of survivors once came across a safe abandoned by the Wehrmacht filled to the brim with Reichsmark banknotes and they burned them all so they wouldn't freeze to death.

His son-in-law (my grandfather) enlisted for the Ethiopian War to run away from an arranged marriage and was then drafted for the disastrous Italian Expedition in Russia. He would never *ever* tell anyone how he survived the retreat, he would just say that war is horrible and then shut up.

His story struck me because he thought that violence against his perceived enemies would solve his post-war problems, but it only brought about a far worse war than the one he fought as a 19 years old boy. He paid the price of his recklessness with fear and hunger.

He survived Caporetto (!) and Vittorio Veneto, when he got back home he thought a medal and a shake of hands were not enough and he - sadly - joined the blackshirts to "set things straight". In the end, he refused to be drafted into the MSVN because he wasn't interested in fascism per-se.

Gah, "an enemy plane". I want an edit button...

(I still get a good chuckle when I remember my great-grandfather telling me how at 99 years old he still kept a grudge against Francesco Baracca (no less!) because during WWI the latter downed any enemy plane on their field kitchen and left them without hot rations for weeks!)

FWIW, I don't want to judge any of them, those who sided with the fascist regime paid bitterly in one way or another and that's enough for me. The important thing is that I got to listen to them and learn from their experiences that violence is *never* the answer to any problem.

My family history is complicated, to say the least: as most Italian people born after WWII, I happen to have ancestors from both sides of the fence and I was lucky to have been able to speak with them and learn what fascism and war were in reality, without any kind of rhetoric.

I get it, not everyone gets to talk about WWII with primary sources, but FFS what the hell are American schools doing?!? Better yet, what the hell have they been doing since the '80s?!?
