I would love to know the background of how the company came to this decision and the people and personalities involved, and with any luck, we eventually will. It feels like they have done quite considerable damage to themselves and their product. Was it worth it?

As noted, VPNs have legitimate and in many cases mandatory applications in IT security and everyday corporate life. This whole approach by the govt is painfully technically illiterate and a massive overreach.
