BUT. It leads to a very McDonald's like homogeneity to the visuals.

Take Quake 3, Unreal Tournament, Sonic Adventure, Final Fantasy X, Gran Tourismo 4 - all flagship games, all different physics and 3d handling.

It used to be COOL to fire up something like R-Type Final and see how they approached fire effects, or object damage.

Now? Oh look UE5. Again.

I started playing Sonic '06 last week for the first time and one thing that struck (and keeps striking) me is how little the graphics meaningfully differ from a 2015 or 2025 release.

Graphics tech hit "we do everything with triangles" and stagnated terribly.

It definitely can feel rough at times. I know I've been given the cold shoulder a few times by virtue of being visibly cis, white and male.
