Ok, quick intro post:

Hi 👋. I'm a technologist working to improve the public's experience of US government digital services. Before that, I used to be a public defender and worked in criminal justice reform.

I like using tech for good and dislike tech that promotes inequality and immiseration.

Since this post found new attention today, I should cite to @inbedwiththeright.bsky.social’s indispensable (if grim) Project 1933 series, chronicling what was going on month to month in Germany in 1933.

I’d be all over this if I was a devops person.

there is a government shutdown with no end in sight and it’s not even really the lead story rn because the president can’t stop invading American cities for no reason other than spite

Rachel News is never gonna let this one go

This example isn’t from a blue state, but it’s not far-fetched to imagine this happening in one—especially at the county/sheriff level bsky.app/profile/matt...

When the nazis were coming into power, there was a lag before local law enforcement was fully on board. People were able to get police protection from nazi-aligned paramilitaries. “Proper” political messaging: partisan banners on federal government websites blaming dems for the shutdown
Improper “political” messaging: a rainbow flag

Kash Patel fired an FBI agent in training for displaying a gay pride flag on his desk while appointed to a field office in California last year. The trainee, who previously worked as an FBI support specialist in Los Angeles, received a letter claiming he had displayed an improper “political” message.

Remember when it was outrageous partisan overreach to use a government website to say that voting is good and to tell people how to do it? www.politico.com/news/2024/06...

a government run by internet trolls, for internet trolls.
message on the hud.gov homepage right now: "The Radical Left are going to shut down the government and inflict massive pain on the American people unless they get their $1.5 trillion wish list of demands. The Trump administration wants to keep the government open for the American people."

I agree that it is probably not a Hatch Act problem. One could argue however that it is lobbying with appropriated funds www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/...

Karl Rove of all people told us it’s the French theorists’ world we’re all living in
The aide said that guys like me were 'in what we call the reality-based community,' which he defined as people who 'believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality.' [...] 'That's not the way the world really works anymore,' he continued. 'We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality—judiciously, as you will—we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors...and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do'.

It’s wild how if you take away the obscurantism and goofy neologisms, so much of Baudrillard could just be a nearly journalistic description of this moment in history.

Thanks so much, Ethan. There are a million tragedies large and small unfolding all the time here, but I'll definitely always be grateful I got to do this work *and* to call you a colleague and friend 💜
