Chicago proper is about 3.5x the size of DC physically and has 4x more people ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
qjurecic.bsky.social
one thing worth noting: the total number of National Guard troops deployable to Chicago is 700 (400 from TX, 300 from IL). that is compared to about 2000 in DC and 4,700 in LA at the height of both deployments.

Donald Trump’s deployments of the National Guard to American cities “are best understood as an effort to erode the nation’s sense that such use of the military is unacceptable,” Quinta Jurecic argues.
Trump Is Destroying One of America’s Oldest Traditions
America has always had a strong aversion to seeing the military on the country’s streets. That is not stopping the current president.

FPD for Sydney Reid (a woman accused of assault after cops manhandled her for filming an ICE arrest) say that the government did not preserve video that one of the officers watching took, which she claims is exculpatory.

They're moving to dismiss the case.

storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...
Other law enforcement officers were present, including Officer Jason Klepec. Officer
Klepec told Ms. Reid that he was filming her, in response to her filming the agents. After Ms.
Reid was arrested, she was put into the backseat of a car driven by Officer Dinko Residovic.
While Ms. Reid was sitting in the backseat, Officer Residovic viewed a video of the incident,
captured by cellphone. Ms. Reid recalls that the video clearly showed what the government has
alleged was an attempted knee to the groin. She recalls that the angle of the video shows that the
knee was not directed at any law enforcement officer but was a reactive movement.

JUST IN: Federal prosecutors in Chicago move to dismiss "without prejudice" the charges against Huburt Mazur, who faced a misdemeanor charge stemming from ICE protests in Broadview.

Mazur's preliminary hearing was set for Wednesday morning.

Hey guys. It's your boy J Edgar here. I have something new that I'm really excited to share with you—it's called COINTELPRO and I really think you're gonna love it

Obviously not the main point here, but it's interesting how this is framed as content rather than policy.

"BREAKING" is typically what journalists or influencers say when they have a big story -- not what government officials say when they launch "undercover" operations

Today, Josh Hawley -- who voted to overturn the 2020 election after fanning the Big Lie that the election was stolen from Trump, the same lie that fueled the Jan. 6 insurrection that Hawley was egging on -- is outraged the FBI reportedly analyzed some GOP senators' phone records in its Jan. 6 probe.

Feel free to attribute the following to a former OMB General Counsel: The supposed "new legal analysis" is, to use a technical legal term, horseshit. What the law actually says is that when Congress enacts a law ending a lapse, furloughed employees get paid at the earliest date possible. Period.

Johnson: "It's true that in previous shutdowns, many or most furloughed employees have been paid for the time they were furloughed, but there is new legal analysis - I don't know the details, I just saw a headline - but there are some legal analysts saying that might not be appropriate or necessary"

based on the standards set by hegseth and others in the administration, this clearly means that hegseth should be fired

LOL the Boston Globe gets its hands on Pete Hegseth’s 2013 Master’s thesis at Harvard KSG, in which he was a bit of a woke DEI lover.

anecdotally, though, FBI and HSI agents working on complex investigations have absolutely been pulled away from those in order to work as beat cops
qjurecic.bsky.social
I did some initial poking around here (www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...) and reuters had a good story a few days ago (www.reuters.com/world/us/did...)—though the question of whether this undermines other investigations will take a while to bear out
qjurecic.bsky.social
I think it's more in the opposite direction in DC—ostensible crackdown on petty crime is pulling resources away from more involved long-term investigate work

When you are arguing that Schmitt has not been influential in your thinking
As I have pointed out many times, the friend-enemy distinction is fundamental to politics,
qjurecic.bsky.social
I think this may be because the officers in question in LA/Chicago were ICE/CBP interacting with protestors, while in DC it was various agencies tasked with acting as beat cops
qjurecic.bsky.social
Yeah, based on reviewing the dockets, LA seems worse than DC in terms of aggression by federal officers, and I agree that drawing a gun and actually shooting someone is an escalation beyond what we’ve previously seen
qjurecic.bsky.social
Same thing happened in LA, same thing happened in DC: prosecutors charged people with assaulting a federal officer and then furiously backpedaled when the evidence didn’t support it

One bad thing I expected to happen, but has not (so far) is a sustained, federal-level assault on reproductive rights, using FDA to relabel mife and miso, and perhaps the Comstock Act to prosecute. Maybe this is just waiting until after midterms, but either way I'd love to see reporting on why
