“Forget the myths the media has created about the White House. The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.”

I don't know I've ever seen them on a menu in DC (as a person who searches out good lengua tacos)

Is that like a mix of cheek, tongue, etc?

Streets are still closed off in front of the Portland ICE facility at 8:30pm. Protesters have gathered on a side street. Dance party in progress.

New piece from me @chriswarshaw.bsky.social , @devincaughey.bsky.social , and Bernard Fraga.

Story: though we've entered a high turnout era, turnout gaps between racial groups have reemerged.

Nerdy story: Using publicly available data, we've generated new, reliable turnout estimates over time.

Perhaps a better analogy is if a group of car thieves created a ride hailing app, and insisted that they be able to keep stealing cars to keep the input costs and therefore subscription costs low.

Also, I’m older now, so I see the wisdom in protecting copyright. If the AI industry can’t flourish without engaging in copyright violations at scale, then it should die

For those of us who are old enough to remember Napster being shut down over a copyright infringement, it is really interesting to see the balance of power shift between entertainment and tech

Where's your go-to spot in DC? Since moving to Takoma DC, I've been more in Silver Spring than the 9th street corridor, admittedly

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

I am not a constitutional scholar but I am pretty sure “the president my personally levy taxes and choose what they fund” is not in fact what the founders intended

Yes, it turns out to be more useful to collect data rather than merely trying to predict it

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing folks to uncritically call large statistical models “intelligence“

Shocked, shocked to discover that an ML model is bad at predicting the distribution of datasets it wasn’t trained on

Made up facts to fit their ideological preferences is increasingly this court’s central methodology
tomscocca.bsky.social
It's not just that they're going to strike down a law against conversion therapy, it's that they're going to do it on behalf of made-up claims from a straw plaintiff who can't honestly show the law affected her at all

One thing about American's widespread distrust and disapproval of the Supreme Court is that mainstream news coverage mostly doesn't dwell on stuff like standing, so people don't even begin to grasp how rigged the Court truly is www.nytimes.com/live/2025/10...

The answer to this depends a lot on what features you need and what price you're willing to pay. I like Alchemer a lot (like 80% of features of Qualtrics, at a much lower price point), but happy to offer more tailored recs depending on what you need
