It's giving ... Talladega Nights

It's a whole block party vibe over here.

Streets are still closed off in front of the Portland ICE facility at 8:30pm. Protesters have gathered on a side street. Dance party in progress.

Just spoke to a family who had an immigration appointment at the ICE facility and were turned away; told to call and reschedule. A volunteer I spoke to is distributing pamphlets w/legal resources. Says dozens of ppl were cleared from the bldg earlier, as streets were being cleared for Noem's visit.

Residents of apartments surrounding the ICE facility say they can't get vehicles in or out and got no warning that the streets would be closed off.

Waiting for more info, but Portland Police Bureau has S Bancroft St blocked off, presumably in anticipation of Kristi Noem's visit to the ICE facility.

The Oregon Republican Party tried to help Donald Trump make the case for military intervention in Portland with an image of a fiery protest — but since Portland is calm, they had to fabricate one by merging old photos of police in Ecuador and protesters in Brazil www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

In response to an investigation launched by the federal government into the Portland Police Bureau’s policing practices at the local ICE facility, the city attorney shot back, laying out a pattern of excessive force used on protesters, and favoritism toward conservative streamers by federal police.

The order applies to National Guard troops from any state.

On Sunday evening, US District Judge Karin Immergut issued a second restraining order after Trump sent California National Guard troops to Oregon, in an attempt to circumvent the courts. The day prior, Immergut ruled that deployment of National Guard troops to Oregon was unconstitutional.

Apparently inspired by yesterday's embarrassing loss in court, Trump has ordered California Gov. Gavin Newsom to send 300 of that state's National Guard members to Portland. Oregon Gov. Kotek says 100 have already arrived, while at the ICE facility, federal agents are growing more violent.

Veterans & supporters gathered at Portland City Hall, urging active-duty service members to disobey any orders to deploy to American cities. "You do not need to follow unlawful orders...you have an obligation to defect from a military that is no longer functioning in the interests of its people."

Portland Police Bureau officers around the corner who stood by watching while the federal officers moved down the city street firing chemical munitions directly at protestors said questions about their role in these situations should be directed to the bureau’s public information office.

Federal forces inexplicably tried to move all protestors out a city block using chemical irritants.

In her ruling, US District Court Judge Karin Immergut said the Trump administration violated the 10th Amendment, and failed to provide evidence that activation of Oregon's National Guard was necessary. The temporary restraining order will be in effect until October 18.

Both the courtroom and overflow rooms are full for the hearing where a federal judge will determine whether to grant the state of Oregon a temporary restraining order against the deployment of National Guard troops in Portland. A dozen or so protesters hanging out outside.

Looks like we have a judge swap in Oregon's case against Trump & DHS over deployment of OR National Guard. Fed attorneys argued US District Judge Michael Simon should recuse himself bc his wife is Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, who lambasted the deployment. US District Judge Karin Immergut will now preside.

The police chief seems to be saying PPB needs to be there to help maintain some semblance of order, because Portland needs to prove it's not a lawless, war-ravaged city. "The risk is high, as the whole world is watching to see how Portland is going to show up, right?"

Portland's police chief says officers will continue to monitor protests at the ICE facility. Data shows protest response is costly, requiring staff to work significant overtime hours. In June, PPB spent over $875K in just two weeks on staffing for its protest response at the ICE building.

I didn’t stutter: there will be no federal takeover of Portland.
courtneyvaughn.bsky.social
I should clarify: there are PPB officers in similar uniforms to the feds, but they're marked with PPB patches and markings. Reviewing additional video footage, there were some PPB officers interspersed w/ fed agents at times, probably by coincidence, but it def gives the wrong impression.
courtneyvaughn.bsky.social
That was a different agency, I'm told. The guys in blue uniforms are feds (I asked because I also thought they were PPB officers.) PPB has sent bike cops and "liaisons" in gray/white uniforms.

In light of larger protest crowds at Portland's ICE facility and the anticipated arrival of National Guard troops, Portland Police Chief Bob Day says local police will continue to monitor the area. Earlier this year, City Council directed PPB to limit the use of overtime hrs on policing protests.

The Portland Metro Chamber, which over the past five years has constructed the narrative that Portland is a crime-infested city where you can't go anywhere to feel safe, said in a press conference that Portlanders should fight against Trump's deployment of federal agents by purchasing more things.
"My name is Michael Liu and I am the current chair of the Portland Metro Chamber and also the owner and operator of Fubonn shopping center out in Southeast Portland. I came here mostly, and I want to say thank you for everyone for showing up, but our main reasons for coming together was to strongly back the mayor's request for calm and to what all the other electives said, and let's not take the bait. When the Trump administration deployed the National Guard in DC, restaurants and small business retail fell by over 30% that's not what Portland needs right now. The chamber is made up of over 2200 members, most of them small businesses, and they're all throughout our city. Downtown has seen a big increase in the amount of foot traffic that it has seen. These are all positive signs of the recovery Portland is making right now. So basically, this is bad for business, and it will set back the progress our city has been making over the last few years. I guess on a personal appeal and everything, I think what we should do to combat this is go out and support our neighborhoods. Go out and support downtown. Go and visit all the small businesses in the neighborhood. We have a great weather this weekend, and it's a great time to go out and support local businesses. Fubonn has been supported. We're coming up on 20 years right now, and it's because of everyone in the community coming together to to be a part of it. So it's time for us to go back, love our city, love our neighbors, and just be Portland."
