My short story "Model Collapse" is out today at Reactor Magazine. It's a dark SF tale about a government agent and his mentee who are sent into a remote town on a mysterious and dangerous project. Edited by Ellen Datlow. Cover by Keith Negley. Link in thread.
Cover for "Model Collapse" a short story by Matthew Kressel. Two small figures climb through a tangled mazelike structure, like the distorted frame of a house. The pastel colors are bright and colorful, but the scene has an aura of darkness.

They are throwing things at the wall, trying to create some "killer app" so they can cash out. The problem is, as tools, genAI is unreliable, and are not being widely adopted.

Another:

“I want people to come to West Fourth specifically and see, like, a moment in time of what people think about artificial intelligence."

This is so weasely, like he didn't foresee the hate and his narcissistic brain is reframing his shit venture into some kind of art nouveau.
matthewkressel.net
Here's a gem from that article:

"I think [having an AI friend] will raise the emotional intelligence of most people and really smooth out the variance in people. There’ll be a lot less weird, chaotic things.”

Oh, you mean weird, chaotic things like people befriending a fucking software product?

The only "debate" here should be why the NY Times chose to valorize a toxic narcissist with poison ideas because he might, at some point, make a few lucky assholes even more rich than they already are.

And another:

“The mayor should come and appreciate what we’ve done,” Mr. Schiffmann said, “because it really is a modern day art exhibit.”

Yes, your subway ad spam of black Arial and Times Roman on a white background that you paid $1M for is in any shape or form in the same class of art as this:
matthewkressel.net
Another "gem":

“We have a cat and a dog and a child and an adult in the same room,” he said. “Why not an A.I.?"

Maybe because the former are all living creatures, and the latter is a product eerily listening to all our conversations in order to squeeze more money out of our already thin pockets?
matthewkressel.net
People have a visceral negative reaction to your product, and your response is, "I'm doing big things." That's called toxic narcissism. And we all know that our current world rewards them, because we've been taught since day 1 to revere assholes if they generate profit.
matthewkressel.net
Here's a quote of his. After hearing that people were vandalizing his ads, he says:

“I kind of view it as a side effect of doing big things,” he said. “People don’t vandalize an irrelevant ad, right?”
matthewkressel.net
Curiously, unlike most NY Times articles, the comments are turned off. Probably because they know the reaction this will generate. The CEO is a 22yo douchebag (read his quotes) who learned from the techbro ethos that "disruption" is a good thing and vacationing at Burning Man is a rite of passage.

At what point do we stop and say, our society in the US (and elsewhere) is sick and in need of help? When we advertise artificial friends because real flesh and blood humans are lacking needed connection, maybe we should rethink the direction we're heading as a society (and as a species).
nytimes.com
An ad campaign for a wearable A.I. companion has blanketed New York City, starting conversations and inspiring vandalism. nyti.ms/4o8teez
An ad shows a pendant and the text reads “friend, noun, someone who listens, responds, and supports you, and points to friend.com.” Written in marker it says, “We don’t have to accept this future.”

“Dear editor,
I asked an algorithm designed to mimic patterns it had learned through the plagiarism of billionaires if it could spit out something that looked convincingly like the stories it had stolen, and it burned through an ocean to deliver whatever this is. Thank you for your consideration.”

Yes, this is a dark SF tale. Yes, the subject is extremely timely, for reasons that will make much sense once you read the story. It's only 3800 words. And yes, this still scares me every time I read it.

It's refreshing to see a culture that actually values artists!

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:
www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employmen...
Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."
