Three things I took from Jane Friedman’s @janefriedman.com keynote talk at Red Pencil:

1. Em dashes are not the devil 😈 (or AI, if AI is the devil 😉).

2. Consider taking the middle way with AI

3. Writers/Editors with cats 🐈‍⬛ rock!

Whether writing or medical conferences, I always go with a written goal in mind.

At this years Red Pencil Conference (@edsguild.bsky.social
#EdsGuuld2025) my goal is to better understand the regional editing resources available to me as a writer!

A little #AI stuff’s OK too.

I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s #EdsGuild2025 Red Pencil Conference at the Lynnwood Event Center, but—sadly—my #StetPet Roo isn’t quite as fond of red pencils! 😉

My morning walk in #Seattle.

Although I usually prefer nature walks, city walks do have their own special vibe!

October Philosophers!

It’s the best time for you to reread Nagel’s famous paper: “What’s it Like to Be a Bat.”

(No matter how much echolocation data and science a person still doesn’t know what it is to be a bat! 🤓)

A slight obstruction on my path this morning.

I easily walked around it.

May my writing go as well today. 🙏🏻

Seen on my think-walk yesterday!

A little patch of my favorite grass:

Bamboo!

(Yes, it’s a grass 🤓)

Look! Someone left me a little leaf and rock sculpture on my favorite bench on my favorite walk.

And now?

I am photographing it and memorializing it here. (I doubt the sculptor thought anyone would do that.)

Walking in the fog.

I love how fog 🌫️ mutes sound; it’s great “thinking weather.”

I’m a little behind on my writing craft reading 😔 , but I enjoyed Michelle Wildgen’s piece in May/June @pw.org mag “On Discomfort.”

She mentions how being out on one’s depth can be thrilling!

I agree. The more resistance I have to doing something, the more I need to do it.

On my walk this morning in the foothills of the Cascades, I’m picking what may be the last ripe blackberry of the season.

Goodbye lovely blackberry; hello autumn.
