Months of cajoling, recommendations and prodding have finally convinced me to sit down and read Hyperion.

This had better blow my mind.

Quite a bit of my fantasy Western novel "Beers of War" is inspired by is the idea of Western range wars, but also the cattle rustling of the Border Reivers in of the English-Scottish border from the 13th-17th centuries. The loss of cows becomes a major plot point as the story goes on!

This afternoon consider supporting a new indie author with some hard hitting military science fiction. I intend to give more in 2026 and will - I hope - have another round of military science fiction for 2027!

Check out the Virtue of Battle today!! 🧵

Today I learned that Napoleon III died from an unnecessary surgery. Why the surgery? Because he was plotting another coup in 1873 and, no joke, believed he needed to be able to sit a horse and look regal enough for the nation. He died trying to look inspiring!

This is preformative grifting to an almost embarrassing degree. From the picture with a middle finger out and a cigar this is just so cringe inducing.

Naturally, as a Christian you should ignore this guy, but man it's sad to see someone pulling the pickup artist bit in 2025.

Russian forces on Western equipment in 2023 using fairly decent defensive tactics showed that even the most modern weapon systems are not simply going to steamroll their opponents when they are ready for them.

Even in mobile warfare we've seen systems taken down quite well. 3/

Watching kids going trick or treating on Oct 25th in the middle of the day is nice to see I suppose, but it's always a bit disheartening to me since I remember going Halloween night with my parents and how fun it was to work around the block with my friends as I got older. So many fond memories!

Another piece of WORLD WAR Z that hits hard at the end. The highlighted portion really sits with me right now. Even though I'm millennial.

"...maybe that's the best epitaph to hope for. 'Generation Z, they cleaned up their own mess.'"

23: Aesthetics of a town/city.

Aletown is very much inspired by your stereotypical Western or frontier town! Wooden palisade and homes and dirt streets.

It's also inspired by Bugman's Brewery from Warhammer Fantasy! Maybe comes off a little better 😉🍻

Whenever we talk about the first ironclad in history we usually think of the 19th century. In reality, the 16th century saw the first ironclad warships in East Asia. Potentially ironclad ships used by Oda Nobunaga, but definitely the fearsome Korean Turtleships which saved Korea from invasion!

It's a really underrated aspect of World War Z that almost every single interview in the novel could be turned into its own miniseries. That it hasn't been tapped for more ideas vs whatever much of the Walking Dead turned into is a crying shame.

21: Housing

Very frontier looking. Mostly wooden houses, some stonework, wooden palisades and in richer baronies proper castles!

The horselords have yurts as their main living quarters on the plains.

19: Sanitation, sewer systems, hygienes.

Well, the Frontier where Aletown sits does not have a well developed sanitation system. Outhouses and manure piles are the norm.

Trust me, they stink. But everyone bathes regularly so there's that!

17: Where does the food come from?

Aletown has a solid network of freeholder ranchers and farmers sworn to it providing most of the staple foods they need.

The rest of the Frontier is similar with Baronies having farms and ranchers under their rule.

16: Fire/police/hospital services

Aletown has the old fashioned fire brigade to fight fires (I just wrote this scene!) which represent the greatest danger.

Rudimentary policing is provided by Rumin's guards who patrol the walls, roads near Aletown 1/2

And as a non spooky comment, here's to Benedict Arnold getting his butt kicked on his way out the door from Canada in 1776 at Valcour Island on this day!

It's endlessly fascinating to me that legends of Lilith - and semi vampire like creatures - go back to ancient Mesopotamia. I think that it's fitting some popular culture has embraced her as the Mother of Vampires.

For #MapMonday a map from @ynot1989.bsky.social for my alternate history project "Wrapped in Flames" a now 10 year running history of the Victorian Era's Cuban Missile Crisis gone hot and the fallout thereof!

One day I'll do write up, but for now find the cliff notes below!
