End-of-year reflections

2025 brought travel (Kraków, Malta, USA & Thailand), plenty of reading, and big professional milestones: publishing Police Custody Healthcare for Nurses & Paramedics, a QICN Fellowship, and stepping into Clinical Head of Service.

Grateful, proud and ready for 2026

Just finished Expert Witness: The Weight of Our Testimony When Justice Hangs in the Balance by Ann Burgess. A powerful follow-on to A Killer by Design. A reminder that expert testimony must be impartial, compassionate, and grounded in evidence. A must-read.

Tonight is Manic Friday, the last Friday before Christmas. Historically, one of the busiest nights for custody healthcare. While my role is usually 9–5, tonight I’m working clinically and supporting teams across the region.

Stay safe to everyone on duty.

In court today giving evidence. HCPs in police custody can expect to attend court a few times a year. My advice: prep well, arrive early, know the rules on what you can/can’t bring in… and don’t forget a good book – there’s a lot of waiting! #ForensicHealthcare #HCP

I just finished 'The Criminal Mind' by Dr Duncan Harding. A must-read insight into CAMHS forensic mental health, trauma, & the expert witness role. Relevant to police custody & youth justice. Powerful, compassionate & eye-opening. #ForensicHealthcare #FHP #YouthJustice #CAMHS

Just booked this CPD with the Academy of Forensic Nursing 🔍💥
Looking forward to exploring the forensic, legal & clinical aspects of firearm violence. A powerful and important topic. Starts June 5!

📚 Just finished Good Cop, Bad War by Neil Woods. More than true crime — an honest, ethnographic look at life inside addiction & the impact of the "war on drugs". A powerful read, especially relevant for those of us in forensic healthcare. #TrueCrime #HarmReduction #FHP

Today I received a first edition of Keith Simpson's Forensic Medicine, published in 1947. 📚 Now in its 14th edition, this classic remains a cornerstone of forensic medicine. A true gem of history and progress in the field. #ForensicMedicine #KeithSimpson

My latest article, 'Monitoring and managing opioid withdrawal in police custody', is now published in
@nursingtimes.bsky.social. Opioid withdrawal is not harmless or benign—it carries risks that require careful management. Read more: tinyurl.com/2pzuxkpb #ForensicHealthcare #OpioidCare

Today, I’m in Crown Court giving evidence—a change from the usual Magistrates Court, where most cases are heard. Crown Court is reserved for more serious offences. Remember: when giving evidence, your duty is always to the court, to present the truth impartially. #ForensicHealthcare

I just finished 'Unmasking Lucy Letby'. Harrowing accounts of suffering without a smoking gun, yet the evidence weighs heavily against her. A fascinating exploration of expert witnesses & justice implications. A tough, thought-provoking read. #TrueCrime #JusticeSystem
