Obviously no one should police another’s taste in books, but I find it very hard to reconcile Badenoch’s public persona and Pratchett’s empathetic view of people. This is what the Mitchell and Webb GIF is made for…

Dad’s books are full of empathy, common sense, and a healthy suspicion of the powerful. But at its heart his work is also about how systems keep people poor while pretending it’s their own fault. So I hope Kemi’s taking notes as well as reading the jokes.

There’s a potentially interesting cultural moment coming up in the first half of 2026 with the release of GTA 6. It’d be surprising if Trump wasn’t satirised in some form. Given how well he can take a joke, a reprisal isn’t beyond the realm of possibility. How will MAGA gamers respond?

It is probably a rash decision, but I've written about why the BBC - and especially BBC News - isn't all bad.

And now, I'd best retreat to my bunker.

The damned BBC - annoying, wrong headed, essential
It is the worst media and news service, except for all the others

Trump: "I was watching during Biden, there were troops standing up, brave. They're spitting at them & screaming. That soldier is standing there, he wants to knock the hell out of the person but he's not allowed to do anything. So they just stand & get abused. I say, they spit, we hit. Is that okay?"

What about fat commander-in-chiefs?

Hegseth: "It all starts with physical fitness and appearance. If the secretary of war can do regular hard PT, so can every member of our joint force. Frankly, it's tiring to look out at combat formations and see fat troops. Likewise, it's completely unacceptable to see fat generals and admirals."

The BBC’s Executive Complaints Unit (ECU) has ruled that the broadcast of Bob Vylan’s Glastonbury set broke editorial guidelines on harm and offence – but did not breach impartiality rules or encourage crime.
