Covering High School Sports for @BostonGlobe | Soon: Summer Intern @ BGlobeSports | Northeastern ‘25
Phillips Andover’s Tam Gavenas is one of the best high school runners in America.

But he’s also a chess champion, a poet, and just as committed to his academic research. And to stay focused, he doesn’t even own a phone.

Tam Gavenas is one of the nation’s top cross-country runners, thanks to a laser-focused approach to his sport - The Boston Globe
This season, the Phillips Academy Andover senior has set a course record in every major race he entered, and will run next in the Northeast Regionals.

Jerry Keefe on NU’s improved penalty kill, which held BC scoreless in over 10 mins tonight:

“Matt Harlow has done an outstanding job on the on the penalty kill, he's taken the lead on that….right now they've got an identity. They're completely bought into it.“
November 24, 2024 at 3:48 AM
Jerry Keefe on NU finally getting their first league win:

“There's been times that we've been pretty good and haven’t come out on the winning side. But you know what? Enough of that. You’ve got to find a way to win a hockey game.….So now it's all about building on this one.“
November 24, 2024 at 3:48 AM
Dylan Hryckowian after Northeastern’s 4-2 win over BC:

“Just bouncing back after countless losses, we felt like the effort was there. It was just a matter of executing and being on the same page, and we were glad we got it done. The energy is high.”

NU 3, BC 1 after two. SOG: 24-21 NU

If the first period was the Huskies' best this season, the second was the most resilient. NU killed off BC's entire major and another PP later in the period. They have 4:11 of PP time to start the third.

20 minutes to claim their first league win.

A notable gap last night between Northeastern and BC in top players' ice time:

NU TOI leaders:
Lemay, 28:19
Borgesi, 24:41
Boltmann, 23:32
Williams, 22:46
Lund, 22:30

BC TOI leaders:
Hreschuk, 21:35
Minnettian, 20:56
Fortescue, 19:35
Powell, 18:05
Hagens, 17:39
Perrault, 17:01

“A few of our mistakes ended up in the back of their net, and that’s the game.”

Northeastern needed to be especially sharp to top No. 3 BC, and they were not.

But when your record is 1-6-3, those issues just feel like part of a bigger narritve. My story:

FINAL: BC 3, Northeastern 0.

Huskies suffer their first shutout of the season, with BC's superior talent winning out in every phase of the game. NU is now 1-6-3 (0-4-3).

For the second straight season, NU has not recorded a Hockey East victory in their first seven league games.

BC 2, Northeastern 0 after two periods. SOG: 20-16 BC.

Huskies controlled the O-zone for a good chunk of the period, but struggled to turn that possession into high-quality looks/shots on net. BC got a couple great transition looks. Steep climb in the third, but not impossible.
November 23, 2024 at 1:41 AM
BC 2, Northeastern 0 after one period. SOG: 11-9 BC.

Pretty much the usual BC show, with Perrault finding Leonard on a 2-on-1 to open the scoring and then Perrault tapping in a rebound later in the period. Huskies got some shots off, but not many high-quality ones.

Northeastern enters enemy territory to face No. 3 Boston College at a rocking Conte Forum.

Huskies are still searching for their first Hockey East win — they pulled the road upset at BC in a very similar spot last year.

No radio call tonight, but I’ll have the usual updates!

Northeastern at No. 2 Boston College (Game 10/34)

— Middle six shake up; Tellier down to third line, Sebastian/McGuire flip-flop
— D Jack Henry misses his fourth straight game
— Billy Norcross gets second appearance of the season
— BC goalie Jacob Fowler returns from suspension

Hockey East leaders in TOI/game:

Vinny Borgesi, Northeastern (29:02)
Luke Reid, UNH (25:14)
Alex Gagne, UNH (24:34)
Jackson Dorrington, Northeastern (23:57)
Cole Hutson, BU (23:49)
Jo Lemay, Northeastern (23:48)

NU has played tons of OT, but Borgesi is a big outlier regardless.

As a one-goal deficit persisted into the third period, the prospect of a devastating series sweep began to loom.

Then, Cristophe Tellier breathed life back into the Huskies.

My story on a dissapointing weekend for NU, but a positive finish to build on: wrbbsports.com/2024/11/17/n...
Northeastern’s struggles persist against UNH, but Tellier’s tying goal salvages a disappointing weekend
Maddie Miller/WRBB Sports BOSTON — As Cristophe Tellier buried the rebound past the diving reach of UNH goalie Jacob Whale, you could practically feel the weight lifted from Northeastern’s bench.  ...

FINAL: Northeastern 1, UNH 1. NU takes the extra shootout point.

NU avoids complete disaster with Tellier’s tying goal in the third, and saved their best period of the weekend for last. Still a poor series overall.

The Huskies are 1-5-3 (0-3-3 HE). Still winless in Hockey East.

Stat of the day from the UNH broadcast, they mentioned that Northeastern is 10th of the 11 teams in HEA in shooting percentage. For a program and staff who have always maintained that their gameplan is about shot quality not quantity, if you have neither you don't have much.

Jerry Keefe said it was a “coaches decision” why Ryan McGuire did not play in the first period. McGuire saw his regular shifts for the remainder of the game.
November 16, 2024 at 2:51 AM
I asked Jerry Keefe what he felt needs to change before tomorrow night’s rematch:

“I don’t have an answer right this second. Probably not a good idea for me to even say much right now….But to say that I'm pretty disappointed in our group right now would be an understatement.”
November 16, 2024 at 2:48 AM
Jerry Keefe after NU’s 4-1 loss to UNH:

“Nothing is working right now. Don't have a lot of answers. We came into this game and did not execute or buy into anything that we talked about doing as a group…for a desperate team right now, that was an embarrassment of an effort.”
November 16, 2024 at 2:41 AM
Final: UNH 4, NU 1.

Not a good showing tonight for Northeastern, who scored their lone goal two minutes into play and was not detailed or sharp throughout.

The slow start continues, as the Huskies’ record moves to 1-5-2. Still in search of their first Hockey East win.
November 16, 2024 at 2:23 AM
Huskies trailing UNH 2-1 after two periods in a fairly sloppy performance thus far.

An enormous third period here to turn the momentum around and claim their first Hockey East win.

UNH 2, Northeastern 1 after two periods.

Morgan Winters scored a goal as the Wildcats power play expired, as NU’s special teams woes continue. Still not a very crisp showing top to bottom.

The Whitt has been rocking. 20 minutes left to get their first Hockey East win.
November 16, 2024 at 1:31 AM
Ryan McGuire is on the ice for his regular shifts in the second period, after he sat for the entire first period (he was sitting on the bench). Unclear as to the reason why.
November 16, 2024 at 1:02 AM
Things I have not seen before at a college hockey game: The entire pep band is out on the ice between periods spelling out “UNH.”

Happy to report no one slipped and dropped their instruments.
November 16, 2024 at 12:48 AM
Northeastern 1, UNH 1 after one period. SOG: 9-8 NU.

For the fourth straight game, the Huskies scored first — this time on Jake Higgins’ first goal as a Husky. Let in the tying goal off a poor turnover. NU’s details have not been great.

Of note: Ryan McGuire has not see the ice yet for NU.
