There’s quite a few of us on here: @teachersforindy.bsky.social - shout out to all of my fellow retired teachers?

I expect you know all about the late, great Michael Marra — such a wonderful, witty and talented man- his introductions were as well crafted as his songs! In normal countries, he would have been much better known in his lifetime! We’re quite good at producing polymaths and Michael was one!

One of the simple ways that the UK government hides Scotland’s wealth is by using a dodgy two-tier tax formula called GERS. Sadly, simple people still fall for it.
maureenpickering.bsky.social
“Scottish" tax revenue (GERS means collected in Scotland) and 2) what is a "UK" tax revenue (collected from Scotland by Westminster). "UK" taxes are allocated on a "national" basis (pro rata based on number population), irrespective of the actual spread of the revenue.

The GERS system is the British government's way of trying to keep Scots both ignorant and docile, many honestly believing they're 'too poor, too wee, too daft' to have a real country.

No one ever asks, if true, why on earth does the UK government do everything in its power to prevent us leaving? 🤔
maureenpickering.bsky.social
This means that e.g. duty from spirits like whisky; oil & gas; and renewable energy very largley are collected from Scotland, but we only get about 8% of it back. So no wonder GERS under-estimates Scottish revenues! I refer you to analysis by Andrew Sharpe using ONS data.

It's more about the erosion of "Scotland the Brand", prior to independence
Scottish Food and Beverage makes up a large portion of our exports and has a huge global reputation, having it watered down as "British" is another attempt to neuter an independent Scotland, like closing our only oil refinery

I do, George! Keen fan of buying local and avoiding union jacks on my food for many reasons!

Watchhe Scotland Channel (YouTube) their Friday weekly news roundups are eye opening after BBC Scotland-Bad-uk-Good.
Their documentaries (like "Flags on our Food") are well worth a watch.
I've seen British strawberries from Fife and Perthshire, Brit whisky (Bell's), avoid butchers rags everywhere🤔🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇪🇺

Very informative and helpful item, George. Thank you for posting this. I would encourage everyone who cares about the provenance of their food, support Scottish farmers and food producers and who wants to keep Scotland the Brand, to watch this!

Westminster & what it has done to Scotland by the Torys & the Labour, LibDems & UKIP/Reform are complicit in the damage to our country & still it continues by those blinkered unionists who need to wake up & stop with the anti SNP keech.

Do you know the Michael Marra song about this occasion? Hamish the Goalie (Hamish McAlpine) played at Tannadice which newscaster Peter Siddons pronounced “Tanna- deechy- very continental!” The song pays passing reference to Grace Kelly’s visit! “There’s Grace Kelly by Taylor’s brothers coal sign!”
