Anyway, hello new followers! Fair warning, campists are not going to have a good time here.

"Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise?"
Ian McDiarmid in Macbeth (1979), quoting Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith.

At 39 pounds per annum, Bob would be doing quite well if he were just out of his apprenticeship. As a senior clerk of long standing (he's the only one who does Scrooge's accounts and has done for years), he would have to make twice that to bring his salary in line with the average.
maxim-dorky.bsky.social
In 1840s Britain, the usual working week was 60 hours, so assuming all other figures in the calculation are correct, Bob's salary works out to $8.83 per hour.

This is like the fifth time I've seen this posted over social media sites now, and at no point has anyone ever pointed out the very salient fact that the calculation in here assumes a 40-hour work week - which didn't exist in Britain until well into the 20th century.

I don't wish to be that guy, (but I'm that guy)..

In 1843, 15 shillings equated to 3/4 of £1 Sterling. (180 old pence, there were 240 pence in an old pound)

According to the official Bank of England inflation calculator that is now worth £83.11

Converted to US$ that is equal to $111.66 per week.

The fact that people are using Bill Clinton as an answer to this is supporting my idea that a significant number of progressives grew up in families that regularly watched Fox News or listened to Rush Limbaugh, but never examined their preconceived notions when they switched political sides.
maxim-dorky.bsky.social
Some people are really, really invested in the idea that Democratic politicians will betray their ideals and constituents at the slightest whim, all in the name of "let's all get along and pretend to be happy", and I really want to know where this comes from.

as ever, this man is the greatest warrior America has ever ever produced, we're always relearning that war is won by egg heads who can keep track of massive movements of men and arms over vast spaces.

HP Lovecraft might have eaten Cheez-Its
In HP Lovecraft's story "The Shadow Over Innsmouth", written in 1931, the narrator describes taking with him a supply of cheese crackers for his lunch.

A certain brand of cheese crackers was invented in 1921.

This means he quite possibly went to Innsmouth to fight the eldritch horrors of Cthulhu armed with Cheez-Its.

I mean, how do you think they got to BE moms?

I still have my fedora somewhere in the closet. (I got it because it was the mid-90s and I was way into ska.)

...I really, really hope you're talking about Gore Vidal in the 40s and 50s, and not Gore Vidal now.

yeah, okay, "democrats and republicans serve the same masters" you can go and fuck off too, little buddy. i do not play that game. one party gives a shit and is trying to chart a way forward, the other is a pack of howling fascists, fuckshits like you are how Trump got elected.
maxim-dorky.bsky.social
Also, sorry, anyone who uses "wine mom" as a pejorative catches an instablock from me.
maxim-dorky.bsky.social
Anyway, "liberals are my bitch mom telling me to clean my room and do my homework, leftists are my cool dad promising he'll take me to the ball game and the amusement park" remains a pretty reliable lens to view politics through.
maxim-dorky.bsky.social
"Centrist," like "neoliberal," has become such a broad way to say "something I don't like" that it's become meaningless.
maxim-dorky.bsky.social
You've proven my point quite clearly. Thank you.
maxim-dorky.bsky.social
And Axios and Politico would be the neighborhood gossips, always judging and being catty to mom and letting stepdad off with a "oh, well, boys will be boys".

Though this metaphor might now be bent to the point of pain.

And wouldn’t that make MAGA your abusive stepdad? The person you should actually be mad at, because he’s the one hurting everyone, but you’re madder at mom for her inability to stop him.

Meanwhile, because your real dad isn’t around and doesn’t actually want to take responsibility, he remains pure.

Taraji P Henson sat up on a whole televised award show and talked about Project 2025 and its implications. Black pastors, politicians, scholars and other celebrities warned about it.

White people didn’t care. They didn’t believe that it would get this bad. Same old song.
kdrothschild.bsky.social
Not only did you know, you pointed REPEATEDLY to the source manual: Project 2025. Their manual. Written by the very people now enacting every aspect of it.

White people keep believing in their security without basis, while minorities did the assigned reading. And it wasn’t enough. Again.

This is pretty much the same thing Tom Wolfe said in his story "Ambush at Fort Bragg" in 1995, where a group of soldiers beating a gay comrade to death was portrayed as understandable, and the reporters presenting the story were portrayed as amoral scum.
maxim-dorky.bsky.social
If there's a purpose to replying to "What Trump and the GOP are doing is bad" with "You're surprised, you rube?! This is what America's always been, dumbass! Read a book!!", I can't see it.

Unless the purpose is to shame and silence anyone opposed to Trump.

A fuckton of people can't seem to understand that there's room for things to get worse, so they downplay any new atrocities as being same-old, same-old, normalizing the growing fascism and authoritarianism, enabling it.
