Basket cells, parvalbumin expressing or fast-spiking neurons, names that emphasize different properties of the same type. However they are not all the same, like these in the mouse barrel cortex: one has axon in its layer; the other sends axon to other layers

Interesting passage. Buffon starts with a jab at the idea of classification by means of reducing beings to an ideal form. Are we, cell typers, exaggerating in splitting the transcriptomic dendrograms?
This reminds me of Agmon’s review

Lorenz wrote of a starling hunting invisibile insects and his hypothesis that the bird was satisfying an urge to hunt. That gave rise to his hydraulic model. Recently I heard a beautiful talk by @dulaclab.bsky.social that reminded me of that story
