Honestly, the schedule says that anything other than playoffs would be a letdown.

Recent MDPI paper including diagram of a bacterial cell with a mitochondrion 🤦‍♀️ The authors propose a mechanism for the toxicity of silver nanoparticles: "Ag+ ions in AgNPs bombard the bacterial mitochondria’s electron transport chain, resulting in cell death".

Ed Kravitz passed away yesterday.
He was a remarkable scientist and mentor- brilliant, curious, creative, and kind. I am grateful to have learned from him. His legacy will endure through his science and through the many people he inspired.

We will miss you, Ed.

As a #VfB fan, not sure how I feel about this. Woltemade is a difference maker and will be missed. But really hard to walk away from this amount of dough.

1. The philosophy of science sometimes gets an unearned reputation as a purely academic exercise that offers little by way of concrete tools for advancing research.

This is wrong.

And today, as we grapple with how AI is changing the nature of scientific activity, it's desperately wrong.

Loved him when he played for the Sox for one year. An absolute baller. But probably a full-time DH going forward.

Named one of the Graduate School’s Kopchick Fellows earlier this year, we’re thrilled to spotlight Dounya Jalloul’s research on how the brain processes information and the impact this has on mental health. Congratulations, Dounya! Read her story at https://loom.ly/PJQnF3g. #WeAreGSBS #Neuroscience

Fabulous post by @randomwalker.bsky.social & Sayash raising the same concern many of us have about whether we're on the right track with how we're using AI for science. Everyone should read it, take a deep breath & think through the implications.

If people think American scientists are somehow going to land in Europe, I've got news for you about the difference between millions and billions.

www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Bar chart titled "Matters of Scale" comparing proposed US research budget cuts to the European Union's €500-million (US$571-million) "Choose Europe" fund. The chart shows:

* National Institutes of Health (NIH): $8 billion in cancelled grants and $18 billion in proposed cuts by 2026 (long orange bar).
* National Science Foundation (NSF): $5.1 billion in proposed cuts by 2026 (shorter orange bar).
* EU's Choose Europe fund: $571 million (very short blue bar).

The graphic highlights that the EU fund is much smaller in scale compared to the US budget cuts. Text above the chart explains the EU’s intention to attract US researchers in response to policy decisions by the convicted felon and rapist Donald Trump.

📣New study in Neuron, featuring modeling insights: "Cell-Specific Dendritic Integration in Cortical GABAergic Interneurons"! It reveals PV & SST interneurons compute differently. This highlights how distinct dendrites enable specialized brain computations!

Distinct dendritic integration strategies control dynamics of inhibition in the neocortex
Dendrites critically influence single-neuron computations, but their role in neocortical GABAergic interneurons (INs) remains poorly understood. We fo…
