Substitute "Blue States" for California.
Does it exaggerate the situation? A bit. But the fact of the matter is that it only gets worse if you move your perspective down to the county-by-county level. Blue counties account for something like 70% of the U.S. economy.

It's profoundly sad for me to watch a significant portion of my country fall into ignorance and stupidity. This is just one example, and it's been brewing for a while, but now the morons have the wheel of America's scientific enterprise to use to invent a justification for their fact-free beliefs.

Cause, or effect? There have always been right-wing churches. I haven't seen any real attempt at measuring the political skew of Christian churches in general, but even if on average they've moved to the right over the past several decades, I'm not sure if that's really driving...
