This is the kind of bullshit people say when they either have no sense of history or are willfully and deliberately ignorant. #WAStateLegislature

There's a scene in Zhang Yimou's To Live where the main characters' daughter is having a baby, but they have fired and shamed all the Ob-Gyns. There are complications, and the young doctors (who admit they are really students) don't know what to do.

"The Message" by Ta-Nehisi Coates

His writing just gets better and better. Clarity and purpose.

“I don’t really worry about the young, whose excesses are confined to lecture halls and quadrangles, so much as I fear the old, whose tyrannies are legislative.”

"By the Fire We Carry" by Rebecca Nagle

Too rich & detailed to quote; this felt like a bookend to "Unworthy Republic" that I read at the beginning of the year. Must read.

"Neurotribes" by Steve Silberman

“the notion that conditions like autism, dyslexia, & ADHD should be regarded as naturally occurring cognitive variations w distinctive strengths that have contributed to the evolution of technology and culture rather than mere checklists of deficits & dysfunctions”

"Fall Down 7 Times Get Up 8" by Naoki Higashida

“There are times when all goes well, when I compose a sentence and stand back just to enjoy it. This sensation is like admiring a tall building I've designed. With luck, the building has no wasteful elements and every detail is noted and works."

"Strong Female Character" by Fern Brady

Hilarious, heartbreaking, and lovely

“Just you wait, I thought. I’ll think of something really clever to reply to you in about a decade, just as soon as I replay this scenario in my head dozens of times.”

"What Have We Here?" by Billy Dee Williams

It's so fun to picture Billy Dee in all the scenarios he describes, acting on Broadway, painting, hobnobbing, and being fabulous everywhere he goes.

"Chandelier baby, chandelier."

"The All New Don't Think of An Elephant" by George Lakoff

So much that changed my thinking about communicating more clearly in politics.

“People do not necessarily vote in their self-interest. They vote their identity. They vote their values. They vote for who they identify with.”

"Finding Me" by Viola Davis

What a life, what an inspiration.

“It’s futile to ask why. Instead, ask yourself, ‘What did I learn from this?’” What have I learned from all of it? There is absolutely no way whatsoever to get through this life without scars.”

"Leslie F*cking Jones" by Leslie Jones

I loved loved loved this book! Audiobook is def the way to go.

"I remember hearing Diana Ross once say, “Know who you are because if you don’t, they will make you what they want.”

"Music is History" by Questlove

“If history doesn’t pass through to the people who occupy the highest offices, there’s bound to be trouble. A nation of ignorance holds us all back.”

There's too much here for a quote. This book stays with you and shook me, especially after looking into my husband's family history. His great-great-grandfather moved from SC to GA at the time of the Indian Removal Act.

The Upcycled Self: A Memoir on the Art of Becoming Who We Are by Tariq Trotter

“Maybe as I reveal myself in all my truth and fear and inspiration and complications, you’ll go searching for yourself a little harder too.”

This poor guy wouldn't stop shaking until about an hour ago.

It's wild that we are still having conversations about vaccines and autism when mass vaccination campaigns didn't begin until the 1960s and autism was first described as early as 1911 (Bieuler) or 1930s-40s (Kanner & Asperger).

And spreading, multiple cases in Cowlitz County too. For the vaccinated, it can look like a lingering cough. Testing and treatment can help the spread to vulnerable infants.
