I’m sure he’ll eventually realize that, too - he just happened to be raised by scientists rather than lawyers.

My high school English teacher had us memorize and recite poems to the class - this was one of them. I love that my sisters and I still randomly recite Chaucer to each other decades later.

Thanks so much, Sarah - appreciate the offer very much.

Nods from my sofa. A Seattle day that demands only the slow sipping of coffee in bathrobes.

Agreed.

That’s helpful perspective, thanks.

It is. I immediately picked up my phone and wrote this down because it was such a gut punch to hear from a young high-schooler.

He’s a perceptive kid with two parents that have lost federal grants this year - I hadn’t realized (though I should have) the degree to which this would be internalized. 💔
As a parent of a teen, I agree with the sentiment, but I don’t believe for a second this is an accurate quotation of something a teen said.
My teen, who had dreamt of being an astrophysicist, just told me he wants to go to law school because, “Science isn’t going to be a priority in the US in the future…I don’t want a job where I’ll be constantly worried my funding will be taken away.”

Gutting. How many future scientists have we lost?

Ugh, I'm sorry. Glad he's choosing med school, though - we desperately need doctors.

It really is, both for him and what it portends for so many other bright young minds and American science.
December 7, 2025 at 6:50 AM
To be fair, this is a kid who's seen both parents have federal grants terminated this year - hopefully the average young person isn't quite as discouraged (though our current reality warrants it), and even more hopefully we'll rebuild American democracy and science so they won't have reason to be.

You're not alone - NYT architecture critic Herbert Muschamp described it as "something that crawled out of the sea, rolled over, and died." Personally, I appreciate it for its total weirdness.

RIP. Glad to have our own unique (if polarizing) Gehry building here in Seattle: the Museum of Pop Culture (MOPOP), inspired by the smashed Stratocasters of hometown hero Jimi Hendrix.

Agreed though this group is focused on Democrats, specifically.

So glad they gutted DEIJ so we can return to an age of merit-based achievement and recognition.

Apparently there's an org dedicated to recruiting, training, and electing Democratic scientists to public office - they've been quite successful ("In 2024, we helped elect 248 Democratic scientists into offices across the country"), and they're here: @314action.bsky.social
3.14 Action | Electing scientists who will use evidence and facts to fight climate change and fix our broken healthcare system.
We’re on a mission to elect more scientists to Congress, state legislatures, and local offices. As trained problem-solvers, STEM professionals are ready, willing, and able to find solutions for the si...
