Here's the patch from the outside. It's visible if you're looking at it, but way less visible than an exterior patch or a bigass rip. This should keep the jeans from failing for a while longer, keeping them out of an early trip to the landfill.

Here's my finished patch from the inside, along with the thread I used. (I would've just used the heavy duty but I don't have much left).

The zigzag looking thing is herringbone stitch. The rest is running stitch with the occasional backstitch thrown in.

Doesn't have to be neat, just sturdy.

Turn the jeans right side out again so you can keep an eye on how it looks. Start stitching back and forth across the patch, using thread vaguely close to the color of the denim.

If handsewing keep your other hand inside the jeans to feel for the edges of the patch & so you don't sew the leg closed

Turn the jeans inside out and carefully line up the patch over the worn part or hole. Again, line up the grains of the fabric if it's stretch denim. Pin or baste the patch in place (I prefer to baste because less blood is involved).

For extra durability, I finish the edges of the patch. By hand, you can use a whipstitch or blanket stitch. On a machine you can use zigzag, hem stitch, or any of those fancy stretch stitches you never know how to use.

Doesn't have to look nice, this will be on the inside. Just to slow fraying.

Cut a patch a bit bigger than the thin area. You want the edges of the patch to be anchored to fabric that's NOT barely clinging to life. If it's stretch, match the fabric grain so the patch and the jeans will stretch the same way.

Here's a pair of jeans I'm working on tonight: a cheap pair of jeans by Universal Thread (Target house brand) from 2021. You can see the fabric is thin and pilling, but not torn yet. It's a ticking time-bomb though. Haven't been wearing them because I don't want a sudden wardrobe malfunction.

And the euphorbia, an absolute beast of a plant that's lived here longer than we have. Had to get it trimmed because it was taller than the house. Bee paradise when it blooms. I do absolutely nothing for it and it lives on rat blood and spite. Goals, honestly. 5/5

One "money plant", a dubious gift from my mother in law. I repotted it but didn't take the "partial shade" recommendation seriously enough so it screeched and started turning to ash. Now it is in a no sun zone occasionally loomed over by invading tree of heaven sprouts and doing much better. 4/5

One aloe plant I found abandoned on the patio. Like, it was just lying there, no dirt no pot no nothing. Figured I'd stick it in the dirt to see whether it would grow or become compost. Surprisingly, it's chosen to grow! 3/5

Five California poppy plants grown from seeds @zarffyn.bsky.social sent me a couple years ago. They thrive in the summer, hold out through the winter, and are pretty good at reseeding. I try to keep weeds from competing with them too much. I love these lil guys. 2/5

The one thing I hate about the design of my townhouse is that there is no attic or even a crawlspace, so when HVAC folks work on our ducts they have to bring the smallest folks on the team and do things like this

Picked up a tiny, loud 3D printed whistle on Etsy in case I need to alert the neighborhood to an ICE attack.

So of course I made a friendship bracelet to hang it from.

Stumbled across this opera Youtuber (Scores Unstitched) and I've never added someone to my bingewatch list so fast.

I literally HAVE the Turandot score and I had never noticed Puccini [autocaption spelled it wrong] wrote THIS note as just a little guy! (this is like, The Pavarotti Note)

I was gonna talk shit about this guy's sideburns but then I saw his amazing man bun and no, he is 100% perfect, no notes.

You may not like it but this is what peak male performance looks like.
