#WIPWednesday for the Oregon a trail/Gold Rush guys! CW for food insecurity.

More snow falls, and the world seems locked in ice, as though they’ll never move forward again. Food dwindles until they’re forced to make runs to the safe cabin, warning everyone away from the “dysentery cabin,” a warning that’s met with unanimous agreement. But even with the hidden stock, the shelves grow more bare each day, and that’s when worry sinks its claws deep into Stede. The thought of watching Ed lose the hard-won weight he’d only just begun to regain after his illness is unbearable.
“Where’s yours, love?” Ed asks one evening, as Stede sets a plate of beans and jerky in his hands. The firelight flickers across his face, softening the sharpness of his features, though his eyes search Stede’s carefully. “You need to eat, too.”
The truth twists painfully in Stede’s gut. He’s stashed away his own portions in their wagon, a private reserve he’s determined will go to Ed when things get worse. Because Ed needs his strength. Ed has to endure. But he can’t tell him; not when he already knows how Ed would respond.
“I’m not hungry,” Stede lies, though the knot of emptiness gnaws at his stomach with every word.
Ed looks at him, and his expression shifting from questioning to frustrated, and then quickly to angry.
“Bullshit,” Ed snaps, setting his plate down by the fire with a thud.

He’s on his feet before Stede can respond, and the look on his face makes Stede’s stomach lurch. He watches as Ed strides over to where Roach and the Swede are still dishing out the last of the food. Even from across the circle, Stede can hear enough to piece it together, Roach telling him Stede already collected both their portions. And when Ed spins back around, there’s no mistaking the fury blazing in his eyes.
Fuck.
Ed storms across the canvas-covered camp, dropping to his knees in front of him, close enough now that Stede can see the tremor in his jaw as he tries, really tries, not to let the anger spill over.
“Love…” Ed says, his voice tight, his whole body strung taut. “Where’s your food?”
“I told you, I’m not hungry,” Stede says, heat rushing to his face, his lie exposed but still leaving his lips anyway. He knows how red his cheeks must be, knows exactly how transparent he looks, and still he can’t make himself stop.
“Stede, fuck…” Ed mutters, pinching the bridge of his nose before dragging in a deep, steadying breath. When he lowers his hands, they land on Stede’s knees, firm but gentle, and his dark eyes lock on him. “Tell me you’re not trying to stash food for me.”
