Here to represent old folk, we wore Landlubber giant flares in the early 70’s with Earth shoes, which are lower at the heel than the front. Dragging 4 inches of detached dirty hem strips around behind you was definitely a good thing. A hideous thing, but a good thing.

What’s not going to change tho, is the segment of our rural population that’s convinced Asheville is Sodom and Gomorrah, Charlotte is Chicago, all country folk are wise and noble, and all dems must necessarily be yankee transplants.

NCGOP are all busy moaning about ppl who lost everything in the aftermath of Helene whilst holding up millions in state aid and ignoring how many rely on SNAP, Medicaid and food banks. Hate it, but maybe stuff like this is how we get a real course correction in this state.

I don’t think you can take out of the equation though, the families/voters that were long-time dems back into the mists of time while also being conservative, who got shoved to the other side by the success of the culture wars. A perceived challenge to the “old ways” hasn’t flown with them.

Am reading this in my back garden in NC and feeling every word of it, we’re absolutely steeped in it daily. People refer to it as “NC values” with a mix of pride and defensiveness and shotgun waving.
