the netherlands requires historic structures to be open to the public on certain days a year so that could be a good place to start too

bc in many places, it requires making some serious sacrifices to live w/o a car & the housing is expensive

we should probably also not shy away from considering that the region keeps spending literal billions into making driving easier. i'm not motivated enough to dive into all the road projs that have happened in the corridor in the same time period, but it surely is a decent list.

yea, the vehicular cycling clowns love to claim that separated bikeways are dangerous bc of intersections but also simultaneously decry any measures taken to mitigate what can be real concerns w those locations
November 17, 2025 at 7:10 PM
in theory, quiet routes are supposed to be
November 17, 2025 at 6:57 PM
"see, everyone is using the bikeways so we can't ride at tdf speeds, that's why riding in the road is better."
November 17, 2025 at 6:50 PM
yep, tho it's a double-edged sword bc then ppl lean on that history to say we need to be okay with waiting half a century bc that's how long ago this was
November 17, 2025 at 6:49 PM
erm...this doesn't really mean in practice what people think it means. the dutch have plenty of greenfield developments, it's just that they are either appended to an existing city or create a new one in the process which in either case, does mean they're technically not "outside of [a] city."

i remember when this was supposed to be one of the selling points for cng & h2 cars over EVs
November 17, 2025 at 6:22 PM
americans would explode at the loss of shoulder
November 14, 2025 at 9:29 PM
every city is best explored by bike. i always feel so stranded when i'm somewhere w/o one.
November 14, 2025 at 7:05 PM
oh no, the horror! you're trapped behind slow cyclists!

it's not about driving (un)impeded, it's about making sure the transportation system is working optimally for everyone.
November 14, 2025 at 2:49 AM
in america there absolutely are.
November 14, 2025 at 2:48 AM
for bigger roads, yes. smaller streets shouldn't need roundabouts, raised intersections should be plenty.
November 14, 2025 at 2:48 AM
first we need to prune the number of unnecessary stop signs and lights then focus on enforcing those that are truly needed
November 13, 2025 at 7:48 PM
yea that's unfortunately the reality of having only exactly enough senators needed: any of them could blow it up & that's what ended up happening.
November 10, 2025 at 11:42 PM
are they being paid by the govt?
November 8, 2025 at 6:46 AM
maybe not all of them, but certainly a fair amount of them do so they're going down this path precisely to provoke that outcome bc they think they're going to win once it happens
November 8, 2025 at 6:44 AM
yea, he's the problem here
