It’s only a matter of time before people start calling this action sky-ving

Yes I completely agree. I hadn’t noticed that contrast until you pointed it out Richard.

We often had interesting conversations when I asked “Is that what some people think?” “Why do you think they think that?” and “What do you think?” I feel like these kinds of conversations really benefit from openness and respect. It’s a great chance to gain insights into what’s happening in school.

First off I have to say that I didn’t always get this right. I was surprised at the messages coming home from school and sometimes responded in a way that was too something. Just too much. In retrospect the best conversations were the ones in which I asked questions and listened instead of telling.

An abbreviation (ABB) in a journal article (JA) or Grant Application (GA) is rarely worth the words it saves. Every ABB requires cognitive resources (CR) and at my age by the time I'm halfway through a JA or GA I no longer have the CR to remember what your ABB stood for.

I don’t understand the 1-like-1-thing thing at all (am I missing something?) but I like so many of these takes that I find it difficult to say which is my favourite.

I don't want to do a 1-like-1-thing post but I do want to have a long thread of takes so instead:

And also — it is not just students who are inclined to use AI in these ways. These technologies are designed to draw people in and they do so in a multitude of ways. We need to be thinking and talking with each other and with students about these issues so that we can all manage them better.

I'd be interested to know what proportion of academic related prompts were questions that the lecturer would be only too willing to answer if asked at the end of a lecture or on the VLE discussion board

I agree. And it makes me think about whether LLM use in education (as in life) might decrease people’s willingness to participate in the give and take of conversations, which can sometimes feel a little uncomfortable but can also challenge us and help us consider new perspectives.

Thank goodness the capacity for counterfactual thinking can be very helpful for considering alternative courses of action! We have the opportunity now to have conversations with fellow academics, students, and university leaders about the kind of future we want. Let’s do it.
