I’ve been making comics for fifteen years and I am thrilled to say that I just signed my first book deal.

Oni Press will release A Ghost Arm Made of Angry Ghosts as a 175-page graphic novel.

I half set up our booth at NYCC. That’s good enough for today, right?

One of our big goals for Macabre Valley was to get the book in front of 300 potential readers.

We're now just 11 away, and it would mean a lot if we could get a few more folks to pre-order their copies today and take a chance on our comic.

Anyway, I’ll be at SPX again in a few weeks. If you’re there, stop by table J8 and say hi. I promise all of my stories aren't bummers!
mertzmakesstuff.com
SPX was the last place he ever went. He probably should have rested and not gone, but he was a damn good dad, and he wanted to see me doing the thing I loved.

So yeah, I think of that every time SPX rolls around.
mertzmakesstuff.com
Shortly after that, he took a much bigger turn for the worse and couldn’t leave his bed. No more doctor's appointments, no more chemo, no tests, just lying in bed with us trying to make him comfortable.

A few weeks later, he was gone.
mertzmakesstuff.com
He got to my table and we took a photo. He sat for a few minutes in my chair, and then I helped him back to the car.
mertzmakesstuff.com
For some reason, whenever I think of my dad slowly making his way through the crowd at SPX to get to my table, I think of the Chariots of Fire music playing. I don't think that's the right reference, as I've never seen Chariots of Fire and I have no idea what it's about. But it FEELS right.
mertzmakesstuff.com
I got him a badge, and he and my mom arrived midday. I helped him as he slowly hobbled his way to my booth. It took about ten minutes to make it through the busy room. Everyone was rushing this way and that, and he was moving like a snail, determined to see my table setup.
mertzmakesstuff.com
He had been fighting the pancreatic cancer for the better part of two years, but he had taken a significant downturn over the summer. He could barely walk at this point and was so frail. He looked like a skeleton. It was rough. But that wasn’t going to stop him from seeing me at SPX.
mertzmakesstuff.com
I had been making comics for a number of years at that point and had been doing cons. My dad, who was incredibly supportive of anything artistic that I did, had never seen me at a con, and SPX was less than two miles from my parents’ house.
mertzmakesstuff.com
With @smallpressexpo.bsky.social coming up, I thought I’d share a story about why it means so much to me. Twelve years ago, SPX was the last place my dad ever went. Like, ever.
