an inked double page spread from blade maidens issue 5, dead in the water. it features an epic chaotic battle between merfolk and the crew of the harpy's talon. the captain, sword raised, in front, mel in wolf form mauling a mer person and taking a bit out of their neck. ser locked in a fight with her sword against a mer person's blade. mer folk hanging from the sails and ropes above the ship and climbing over, the crew surprised and trying desperately to hold their own. all of this occurs in the dark of night.

As I said before, you can mitigate for this a bit by adjusting for gutter etc, but the only surefire way to prevent it is NEVER PLACE IMPORTANT ELEMENTS IN THE CENTRE OF A DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD.

We all love the obvious graphic power of a monumental, centered image on a double-page spread, but artists, please, heed the words of someone who's been doing this for a long time: if your work will EVER be published in book format, the entire concept of designing a DPS this way is off the table.

How terrifying to these dark-hearted bigots we must be: An enemy that can't be genocided. They can find our metaphorical fields but their salt won't work. I don't care what they threaten us with... I'm not going back. Or hiding. Or being silent. No.

We won't bend our knees and kiss the ring and for that "they" want us dead. They conjure nightmares about us and spread hate, wishing we caused a fraction of the mayhem they accuse us of- to justify it.

Coming from where I do, I always understood that being out was dangerous. That queer people have a tentative amount of safety granted to us by a society that will always turn on us when they need a good scapegoat. So here we are again.

Enemies of the party in power for what? Our nonconformity?
