Labels are useful things, but not when they're so broad and vague as to obscure what you're really talking about.

"Don't breathe indoor air or too close to each other" was only ever going to be a temporary, emergency measure. It's not something that most people will or can feasibly adopt as a lifestyle.

Along with Olsen (I was a big psy-harmonics fan), we lost another of my faves this month.

Synchro was an Amsterdam goa and prog-trance producer, with an angular and tongue-in-cheek approach to a genre that sometimes took itself too seriously.

Gillis' writing has two bangers: that our acceptance of death alienates us from life and ourselves, and that an accurate model of reality is needed to be a morally responsible person.

"Two wrongs don't make a right" is true in two senses. One, it's wrong to add an additional harm; two, it's wrong to try to justify the first one.

I'm also organizing the world into groups of good and bad guys, to some extent. It's probably not possible or desirable not to.

Even so, I gotta watch out for that. When you only see through red lenses, all the flags look like red flags.

It's inherently wrong to hurt, wish harm on, or threaten any feeling being. That we can't reduce the wrong to zero doesn't make it unwrong; it means we need to take the optimal path to harm reduction.

One of my pet peeves is the "we don't want this/never asked for this" narrative. It's a kind of technopopulism, which frames consumer technology as something imposed from above by shadowy corporate cabals.

The interesting thing about Cybertrucks (which are otherwise not very interesting) is they reveal the preservation of aesthetic taboos as left-coded, while their breaking -- in tandem with conspicuous consumption -- has become right-coded.

What I object to the most about Christianity -- besides Jesus being a bit of a tosser -- is the effect it has on the mentally ill. It's literally harming the least among us.

I bought a Mononoke mousepad after twenty years of raw dogging the desk, and it's objectively the most beautiful thing in my room.

What's both frustrating and endlessly fascinating about Megalopolis is how lopsided it is. It fills out some of its ideas in triplicate while wispily suggesting others, the way an actual dream might.

Megalopolis (2024). I get why folks bounced hard off this but it worked for me in the end. The Zardoz of 2024 in all that implies, its ambitions inseparable from its failures, and by allowing itself to get ridiculous and exhausting it leaves room for moments of sublime beauty and emotion.

RPGs are a kind of systemhood. In your typical JRPG, you (the player) aren't just one person, but several. The 'party' is made up of different characters, controlled by a single player, and collectively possesses a distributed and modular identity.

For me, it's a bit like asking "what do people see in a dream?" As a kid, the arcade was a collection of portals to different worlds, each with their own culture, inhabitants, lore, and laws of physics. I played (or watched others play) them for the sheer joy of discovery.

I'm kinda getting sick of veganism needing to exist.
It should be a moral baseline that animals are not exploited for trivial and indefensible shit.
It takes one second of looking in an animal's eye to know that there's someone in there, that's enough to leave their bodies alone.
