Solutions could include:
➡️ Curbing wildlife pet trade by implementing welfare focused regulations
➡️ Reducing demand in consumer regions (such as the EU)
➡️ Address online trade and markets
➡️ Harmonize enforcement efforts
➡️ Increasing rescue, rehabilitation, and repatriation knowledge and capacity.

At our rescue centre we see every day the devastating consequences of the wild animal pet trade. At the same time, not addressing this trade means that our exposure to new invasive alien species, wildlife diseases, and emerging and spread of zoonotic diseases only increases.

The EU is a global hotspot for the legal and illegal trade of wild animals, who are then inappropriately kept as pets. This represents a significant risk, not only to animals, but also to human health, biodiversity and undermines the integrity of the EU single market.
