Cheese Tourist 🧀

They didn’t need to. They were getting glazed by media and local government for their brilliant innovations (at least in San Francisco). My city gave them tax breaks and carte blanche to open here & test their products on city infrastructure.
It was infuriating

That worldview is simple and straightforward: Law enforcement only goes after people for committing crimes, therefore if law enforcement is coming for you, you are surely a criminal.
All you had to do was not break laws

Until now their lived experience has aligned with a whitewashed, propagandistic version of America

They’ve never been on the side where institutions and systems exist to harm them, so the second they see or feel what our country actually does to innocent people they assume it’s an anomaly.

But one of the bad habits (shared, I'm afraid, by people who might be considered left) is to pretend to care about oppressed people by lashing out at people who don't care enough or do it right, when you yourself are only using said oppressed people as a pretext for this hobby.

They think we exist to fill specific roles that serve them.

They see us only in relation to themselves

Finally, it's wrong AS A MATTER OF ETIQUETTE. Entering a total stranger's discussion and leading with your private anxiety is as off-putting in social media replies as it would be in real life. If you wouldn't interrupt a stranger at a party to announce that America is doomed, don't do it here.

This iconic segment right here (not my favorite of the year but worth an honorable mention)

I think most locals would struggle to live in a monoculture after being in The Bay. Acceptance & curiosity are fundamental to our lifestyle cause being around different cultures in mundane ways is hella enriching & makes life way more interesting. Plus who could survive on only one type of cuisine?

Would that make Weiss George Castanza?

He’s not wrong in the sense that most billionaires are insatiable sociopaths who are singularly focused on making money, and are willing to sacrifice things that most people wouldn’t (relationships, the environment, civilized society, etc.) in order to have more of it.

Just wanna reiterate that eventually those articulated facades blend into the landscape and define the aesthetics of a city for future generations. Doelgers were cheap pre-fabs that were largely written off as ugly and soulless and now they are icons of SF’s architectural charm.

Yes, there is a lot of grumbling about ugly, cheap looking architecture, but whining about anything new or different is a sacrosanct urban pastime.
Parisians hated the Eiffel Tower. San Franciscans hated the Trans America building and the deYoung museum. It’s just part of the process
