This game was made by a good friend of mine. I've played it a lot, and if you'd enjoy a comic book narrative and wide variety of puzzle and dexterity minigames in your escape-room-style game, I'd highly recommend it.

Hey heads up, The Game Changers paperback is on the shelves in most good UK bookshops right now. If you would like some positive reading about how we are all deeply connected as humans, & how games build communities in the darkest times, you might find something of value in it.

aww that's so cool to hear! honestly this is gonna be on my mind a lot with any future designs I work on, it's condensed a lot of the ideas we gradually found along the way and added a lot more to chew on

That's awesome, congratulations! And it looks amazing already 💕

If your courtship game has you competing with other players to have a higher stat to attract the attention of an automated partner, then your courtship game has the ideology of incels. Maybe it isn't as sexist, but it shares the same mindset as people who think dating is a metrics game you can win.

this manifesto has given me a lot to chew on!! thank you jay!

I'm really interested in continuing to work in the board game space on games about individuals in community, simulating the outside pressures placed on them and leaving them space to inhabit and create characters and stories that come out of that system.
miasmacorp.bsky.social
I love when people lean into it and play a really fiery, strategic game of MH. but I also love when players invest in building the community, often to their own detriment, or have such a wildly good time they throw caution to the wind, gluttonously devouring all the joy they can before they all die.
miasmacorp.bsky.social
MH presents win conditions that I have described elsewhere as a trap. the game asks you to engage in jealous rivalry over 'joy', or destroy a community to avoid your own death, or even to throw a tantrum and get your friends killed. all of this fuels a fiction that resembles historical records.
miasmacorp.bsky.social
the abstraction in the final game is intentional, the gaps left to be filled, much as the historical record is full of gaping holes, waiting to be interpreted. it requires players to rub up against the system (and each other) to be brought to life.
miasmacorp.bsky.social
nothing we could design in board-game-mechanism vocabulary could hold a candle to the narrative capabilities of our players' imaginations. we designed the systems and the incentives, but not the stories.
miasmacorp.bsky.social
we realised this approach felt... well, firstly, gross, but also nothing like real parties and real relationships. it was really @colewehrle.bsky.social's development of the poker/brag-inspired festivity system that started to bring the game to life.
miasmacorp.bsky.social
unfortunately, what board games excel at most is simulating financial competition and military conflict, and a lot of the mechanisms we've inherited reflect this. festivities were, for a while, an uninspiring set collection side quest. relationships were area control conflicts on molly cards.
miasmacorp.bsky.social
from early in the process, MH was about building community, and finding ways to have romance, sex and get up to gender fuckery against the backdrop of a campaign specifically designed to kill you for doing so.
miasmacorp.bsky.social
this is absolutely electric.

here's some first thoughts about jay's inclusion of Molly House in this manifesto (I was nodding along while reading and honoured to see it mentioned!) and how we sort of stumbled into this approach.

I'm overjoyed by this Molly House review from @mattthr.bsky.social in the latest @senetmagazine.bsky.social! It's a wonderful thing when a reviewer gets it, and Matt definitely gets it. Thank you.

For research reasons I'm trying to get hold of scans/photocopies of Sid Sackson's columns in Strategy & Tactics, particularly the ones from #45 through #48 (looking for a specific item which would have landed in one of those issues), published in late 1974 and early 1975. Feel free to share this.
