I already believe your ghost story
I've started White Nights and it's...fine? We learn one character was so buckwild that she had to be pinned by her skirt to her grannie's skirt. So it shouldn't surprise anyone that she is extraordinarily inept at making healthy choices.

Today's rainbow.

(I'm about 200 pages from the end of The Idiot by #Dostoevsky. This is the Myers translation from Oxford University Press.)

This afternoon's prism effect.

It's whatever this many is, minus one, because I left my bag at a bus stop back in December and it had a Marseille deck in it.

I'm not skilled in any kind of divinatory art; I think they're real pretty, and have found them helpful in personal work.

When I was real sad once I bought a Wiccan amount of crystals and prisms and I still get real sad sometimes, but I also get this effect when I'm reading in bed in the afternoon.

But seriously, we're picking up this guy from my friend Matt, who fosters cats and is SINGLE, gentlemen, if you're in the mid-Atlantic region and not a creepy weirdo

There's a song that goes with the text group name that's an adaptation

For Stepan Trofimovich, Stanley Tucci. We've wanted them back together since #EasyA, but, because God is a Calvinist, it has to hurt a little.

Who would I cast as Varvara Petrovna? Glad you ask:

Patricia Clarkson, 100%.
January 23, 2025 at 1:15 AM
I cannot overemphasize how very much in love with Varvara Petrovna I am. I'm also absolutely certain she would be invited to all of Anna Scherer's parties.

I have wanted nothing more in my whole life than to see my dear friend, Varvara Petrovna, come to triumph.

He was the first pet that was mine from the beginning until the end, and what a marvelous time that was. I'd be greedy to want more. And yet.

Since Z&I will never have kids, cats is the closest we'll get & I have found it queerly affecting watching the parent he is. If that had been in the cards for us, those kids would have been alright. (I know people feel Certain Ways at "pets as children" and those assholes can fuck all the way off.)

It's not a decision I love. My friend Steve really helped me a lot. The context in which he put Fosco's life for me -- eternally in the present, not lamenting some mythic lost future or wallowing unhelpfully in the past -- gave me the courage to do the right thing.
December 31, 2024 at 11:38 PM
His name is Little Baby Fosco, and he is my cat, my grandpa, my best friend, and my husband. I've known him since he was a kitten -- 16 years -- and it's a debt, his love, that I'll never repay.

So we're clear:

Wolf Hall is the best novel written in any language, dead, current, it future. It's the only book I'd want with me on a desert island.

I also own 20 various copies, in hard- and paperback.

AND I've kissed a lot of boys, stop asking.

8. Kafka's Diaries
9. Dead Souls

I don't know that it's all that smart to power-load the front of the new year with all this Russian literature. These two sort of round it out, if you count the Czech Republic as one of the coasts.

But I want to stick w/that preface, bc it gives us a good look at the way Henty is structuring his argument. (This is where I think there is nascent antisemitism. Also, it's very important to be super clear: this is my first time through and I'm on chapter 2. I only know what I know now.)

I mean cum💦😭💦on.

[Image is of highlighted text: "It was the tongue, in those days, that ruled men"]

Both images are from this bonkers 1870s book, "For the Temple," by G.A. Henty. It's of its time, which is Baptist for "It's racist and antisemitic," but super readable.

This book I'm reading is TOO. HORNY.

[Image is of highlighted text that reads "Only the men sat down; the rabbi sitting upon Simon's right hand, John on his left, and Isaac and his son at the other end of the table."]

I have also been "Maksimov" messy before. Dostoevsky truly saw the full spectrum of humanity
