Last year's Classic Film Weekend at AFI Silver focused on pre-code films, and this year's is almost all pre-code too. Very exciting!
The returning Kim Luperi and David Pierce are among the introducers (is that a word?), and this year has 100% more Farran Smith Nehme!

Is fall festival season causing FOMO? Consider The AFI Silver Classic Film Weekend in Silver Spring, Md. It returns Nov. 6–9 with restorations, rarely-screened gems, silents with live musical accompaniment, delicious pre-Codes, 35mm prints. I'll be introducing a few! silver.afi.com/classic-film...

I just picked up the schedule and was happy to see your name all over it! Was sorry you couldn't make it last year. Looking forward to seeing you there!

I had fun tabling at Philly Comics Expo for the first time yesterday! It was a light show sales-wise, but everyone was nice, and it was cool to meet some cartoonists I hadn't before and to see a few I knew.

(And I made it to The Philadelphia Museum of Art the day before and also ate cheesesteaks!)

Yeah, other than worrying about interesting movies not making enough money for more interesting movies to get funding, the obsession with box office numbers by people who have no financial interest in movies is a sickness. Haha.

Oh, I think that's the one I was thinking of - Kissinger! Thanks.
michaelavolio.bsky.social
Oh, yeah - I can't remember who was involved, but there was an obituary of someone famous (maybe a politician, maybe an entertainer?) published in recent years that was largely written by a journalist who'd died something like a year or two prior. That probably isn't uncommon.

If ICE thugs were at all interested in obeying the law, now would be a good time to remind them that Puerto Rico is part of the United States of America...

Sammy Harkham's next issue of Crickets is on the way! You can pre-order it from his online shop to get a limited edition process zine:

Great cover. I love the way the "C" lines up with the "r" here.

If Trump really thought Comey lied to Congress, he'd give Comey a cabinet position.

Oh, sorry, I had misunderstood that.

Glad to hear that Nexstar and Sinclair have both caved in to the boycotts by people who care about our first amendment rights after those companies previously bent the knee to the illegal threats from Trump's FCC head.

Corporations care about money, not morality or the law. We vote with our dollar.

One of my favorite Bowie albums. I need to revisit it (& your books!).

Great sound, weird concept, some great songs. I sometimes get "toll the bell, pay the private eye / all's well, twentieth century dies" stuck in my head. & that version of "Strangers When We Meet" is so beautiful.

There have been Nazi dog whistles in tweets from the Department of Homeland Security's official Twitter account this year.

Sorry to hear about the passing of Elijah Brubaker. He was a talented cartoonist. I wish there'd been a collection of Reich. Some of his friends and colleagues share tributes at The Comics Journal:

"We want to frame the dead guy who shot at ICE detainees as being against ICE, even though he shot ICE's victims instead of ICE agents, so be sure to write anti-ICE messaging on the bullets he left behind."
"Gotcha, boss, no problem. Anti-ICE messaging it is."
five bullets, one of which has "ANTI-ICE" written on it, supposedly by the now-dead shooter but probably by a corrupt law enforcement officer

I wonder what percentage of people watching caught the Jack Paar reference.

Kimmel's first line back should echo Jack Paar's when he returned to The Tonight Show after having quit for a few weeks due to censorship:

Disney used to be such a tough, litigious company. Now they bend the knee to a wannabe dictator illegally threatening them, and then they bend back the other way after boycotts in protest. What a bunch of spineless losers!
Glad they made the right decision to bring back Kimmel, anyway.

My point is just agreeing that a Democrat doesn't need to coddle Trump cultists to become the next president.
michaelavolio.bsky.social
And Biden didn't beat Trump by being graceful, he won because enough of us had just gone through four years of Trump and hated that monstrous piece of shit. And Harris didn't win last year when she tried to appeal to MAGA while neglecting Democrats, independents, undecideds, and nonvoters.
