OK...

So, I've taken a punt at writing a first post on #substack. I don't know what kind of a journey this will be, but I'm taking at least a first step. It's an introduction, so would be super lovely to have you say hello!

So, I've decided to rock my photography, like it's 1989.

I've created a new account on Flickr (if one can believe it!), and you can find me here: www.flickr.com/photos/monoc...

Would love to connect on there.

I've started going back through my archives and came across this one I had forgotten I'd taken. It's definitely not the kind of thing I shoot now, but I loved the sense of experimentation.

I think this is going into a new folder called "Photos I don't remember taking but actually really like".

I’ve been away a while. So, I’m into black and white landscapes.

Who should I be following?

And whilst I'm at it, here's 4 of my favourite tree photos, from back along. I guess I'm re-introducing myself to people.

Hi!

So, what's happened in the 6 months or so since I dropped off the edge of Bluesky?

• I got a bit of my life back
• I started writing on Substack
• I joined Foto and have been posting a few images there
• I printed and am selling a second run of my book 'The Dark Wood'.
• I stopped using Vero

I'm back...

Maybe.

I'm not going to blow own trumpet or anything, but this image gave me a 'highly commended' in LPOTY a few years ago. It's the only time I've entered, and only did it so I could say I had. Sometimes you just have to follow your gut.

Finally finished (again) the watch-through of Netflix's 'Dark', and this track just hits perfect this evening with my headphones on. It takes me back to 'THAT moment' in Dark towards the end.

Just so so so good.

@netflix.com - You better not ever remove it!

I took this image around 6 or 7 years ago, as part of my first long-form project 'The Downs'. I was shooting the same location over all season, and the first thing I learned, is that the low-hanging fruit in a project goes pretty darned quickly.

@fotoapp.co Hey there, I'm fairly new to owning an iPhone, and definitely new to Foto. Can you tell me, is saving an image to your phone (Photos app) the only way to get an image into your app?

I can't even see a way of pulling an image in from an iCloud folder.

Is this right?

This is a lovely, thoughtful gift from Dave. Anyone out there who would benefit?
My "The Art of Composition" online course starts next week.

I'm going to gift a few spots to folks who maybe can't afford it right now...if this is you, send me a note to [email protected], no questions asked. I'll draw 3 names at day's end and set you up with access to the course.

I've written a new article on Substack about my experiences in the sanctuary I find the most rest and peace for my mental health - the woodland!

Sanctuary
I think I must have been about 17 or 18, and I spent most of the weekends around that time at the ‘Sir Colin Campbell’ pub, in Coventry.

Woodland, for me, is an altogether different world when the fog rolls in. It's deeps and mysterious and enchanting. I see the same place through different eyes. Like looking at a landscape for the first time.

@birchtree.me @chrislawley.me - Hey guys, catching up on the latest episode, and you've returned to the topic of podcast apps.

Given that you were discussing Overcast and Castro, does this mean that Pocketcasts has dropped off the radar for you?

Are the two discussed a better option in '25?

I still remember taking this photo, notably for the weather that we were facing when we arrived. It was New Year’s Day 2022 and, by the time we arrived, was absolutely throwing it down. But once you're wet you're wet.

I know I've shot and posted this scene 100s of times in the past, but I just can't get over it. You could be forgiven for thinking that all I do is wait for foggy weather, then head up onto the hill. But I just love this view so much.

Over the course of my 20+ years shooting, I would say that there are, maybe, 10 that I think are really good images - and I don’t use that term lightly.

I think this is one of them.
