Excellent article. Here are a couple other tips: In snowbound, forested terrain, plant branches in the snow upright every 100 feet or so to mark your outbound route. On treeless mountains, plant wands to mark your way. GPS units can break, so know how to use old-school methods and analog tools.

Linnea, I think you'd also enjoy Rick Ridgeway's LIFE LIVED WILD and Mick Conefrey's GHOSTS OF K2 and EVEREST 1922. Conefrey is one of my three favorite writers in the genre, my other two faves being Ridgeway and Krakauer.
