I think the difference is that for a paper, I've already been expressing the ideas in the form of plots for months (or years) by the time I get to writing, so it is natural to structure the ideas in those terms first. But that's not the case in a proposal, where the ideas are fresher.

I've usually followed the principle of trying to establish the set of figures before writing text while working on papers. But I just realized this doesn't seem to work for me when writing proposals: I have to organize the ideas with text first before deciding what figures I need.

Great to see our paper published!
We show that the presence of another species doesn't necessarily influence evolution.

Why are there so many fitness metrics in microbial ecology? I was confused as I started the PhD - and with

Quantifying microbial fitness in high-throughput experiments
Few concepts are as central to evolution as is fitness, and yet the quantification of fitness is often ambiguous. In particular, high-throughput experiments to measure mutant fitness in microbes are i...

Not sure if we've hit critical mass here on bsky yet, but the lab is hiring!

We've gotten some good news grants recently, and now have some funded projects that are looking for people to champion them.

All projects use Holographic Optogenetics to study motor systems.
