But now we show it in very similar strains, we wonder "How does this affect evolutionary paths?". For that you have to wait for the next article! Thanks to my co-authors and the reviewers, whose reviews have made us understand our data better and really improved our article: doi.org/10.1128/mbio...
Density-dependent feedback limits the spread of beta-lactamase mutants: experimental observations and population dynamic model | mBio
Since the discovery of penicillin, β-lactam antibiotics have become the most widely used antibiotics to treat bacterial infections. Their applicability is decreasing because bacteria evolve resistance...

The other nice thing is: these strains were only two mutations apart; mutations affecting the beta-lactamase TEM1. That means: costs for resistance only from TEM1 mutations are enough to sustain coexistence. For larger changes, such as with and without plasmids, coexistence was shown before.

I very much like the part that we were able to use a population dynamic model with only measured parameters and predict quite accurately at which antibiotic concentrations and cell densities the strains would coexist! This suggests that we were capturing the most important interactions in our model.

New preprint up! We sequenced hundreds of samples from across one of Earth's oldest living organisms - the Pando aspen clone - to understand how mutations accumulate and spread in long-lived clonal organisms. Our results were…surprising. 1/30
