Correct, Dallos, the very first one literally used "Original Video Animation" as its subtitle for multiple releases. Pioneer never used the term OAV either, in Japan or America. OAV's continued use is purely a nostalgic thing from old Western fandom, even when it's incorrect.

Had a great time at #Momocon showing off the Macross II documentary! A big thank you to everyone who showed up, and for Big West and AnimEigo for sponsoring my trip.

There are virtually no photos of me from shooting the Macross II doc, but I'm so thankful that Jon and Debra had the foresight to take some, haha.

Also, because I mentioned it, Dinner in America (2020) - Probably my favorite music related movie ever. It is simultaneously unabashedly abrasive and beautifully sweet at the same time. It shows you that people are simple but immensely complex all in one. Music is also fantastic. All around stellar.

Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person (2023) This and Dinner in America have pretty much made modern Hollywood dead to me. All the heart and soul of cinema is now in the indies. A fantastic Quebec-french film with tons of charm and sweet baby jesus NUANCE, AHH IT'S NOT DEAD YET.

Watched War of the Rohirrim on NYE. Fantastic addition to the LOTR franchise. Enjoyed it more than the totality of the Hobbit, and leagues more than Rings of Power. If you're a fan of the franchise you really should see it. @clarknova.bsky.social and company should feel proud of this one.

It finally came! The gold version of the Japanese repress of Daft Punk's Discovery featuring the Crescendolls from Interstella 5555.
I was lucky enough that I saw someone on Reddit mention it 15 minutes after it went live and snagged a copy before they sold out.

And finally The Thing (1982) - My favorite horror movie, one of my favorite movies ever, the best horror movie of all time. Still 42 years later it is unnerving and scary even though I've seen it a dozen times. A masterclass in building tension. Carpenter is to horror what Cameron is to Sci-Fi.

As Above, So Below (2014) -
Found footage movie of a crew going into the Paris catacombs and the documentary behind it. Surprisingly light on the jump-scares and more about cerebral horror which was surprising but welcomed. Would recommend to those looking for a lighter entry in found footage.

Congo (1995) - Love me some Michael Crichton. I remember the Taco Bell commercials for this as a kid. They wanted this movie to be the next Jurassic Park but it never felt like it made it to 3rd gear. Nothing really feels like it has a satisfying payoff, even though the ingredients are there.

Big Trouble in Little China (1986) -
The Kurt Russel / John Carpenter combo is GOAT'd. Funny, over-the-top, self-aware and shockingly progressive portrayals for 1986. Carpenter never missed in the 80's, I think I even liked this more than Escape from NY. Absolutely watch it if you can.

Been super busy, but I saw some more movies over my birthday weekend. First - haven't seens:
Flesh + Blood (1985) -
Rutger Hauer is always a treat to watch, and absolutely a reference for Berserk here. Very gritty fantasy with complex main characters. Great watch but very adult themes.

Are you ready to rock, Squidward!?
The 10th anniversary xSPONGEXCOREx vinyl featuring all the music ever released just came in. I was number 152 with the "Patrick Swirl" variant. Sounds fantastic.

And to round out the weekend, another John Hughes classic. Home Alone (1990). Hadn't seen this movie in literally 2 decades at least. Catherine O'Hara should be talked about the way they talk about Meryl Streep. Lots of fun, not as crazy as I remember it, but then again, "crazy" has changed a lot.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987) - Man, I miss old movies like this. No CGI or green screen just a simple comedy with a simple plot and over-the-top characters. I had never seen the entire thing before just clips. John Candy will always be a treasure. Perfect for the holidays.

Mononoke the Movie: The Phantom in the Rain (2024) - I'm so glad that Netflix exists so franchises like Mononoke can continue to exist. As a fan since the original Ayakashi run, Phantom in the Rain is a great continuation of that slowburn thriller / horror style. Can't wait to see movie 2!

Dear Santa (2024) - Saw this one on a lark, JB for me lately has been a coin toss on quality, but this one surprised me. A decent secular take on a Christmas movie.
December 2, 2024 at 5:31 AM
Saw a few movies over the weekend: Up first - Dreamworks's The Wild Robot (2024). Phenomenal movie, arguably the best thing DW has ever made, hate to make the comparison but this is their WALL-E, a movie that is far too good for the greater movie-going audience.
