"hurting" is an unnecessarily emotive word - you're selling a perspective here (that of the alcohol industry), not just stating the facts. Also no attempt to investigate/discuss the other side - has there been any correlating reduction in harm? Disappointing

Do you mean compensation for loss of development rights? It will only apply when the rules are being made "substantially" more restrictive than they already are. My gut feel is that this won't impact urban areas too much, but might apply broadly to rural areas when new env protections are added

Incredibly lucky no pedestrians were killed, absolutely insane that a driver could take out FOUR trees while driving UPHILL. And right outside the entrance to hotels where people would likely be waiting. Drivers this reckless should lose their license and have to start as a learner again.

That little slip has gotta be a contender for pedestrianisation, right? It serves no beneficial traffic flow use. Whack a bollard in at each end, and done - safer for everyone. In time could add trees to lock it in and improve green cover.

To write that whole piece and not mention capital/wealth taxes once is either spectacularly ignorant, naive, or arrogant

Love it, really hoping Council commits to option C and High St gets the full upgrade it deserves

We’re not bad at planning- we’re bad at committing to implementation. And by we I really mean our uninspired conservative politicians

Everyone’s overthinking it - there are already rail lines running through most of Chch’s satellite towns, we just need to start with a bare bones service on second hand diesels running along them to prove the case for future upgrades. Would be 1% of the cost of new light rail and running in months
