It doesn't have to be a huge thing. It can be a small thing to start. Joining a Discord of people who have a shared hobby. Sharing your bad art with other artists just starting. Wear one shirt that you feel a bit unsure if you can pull off. Be earnest in small ways. <3

I admired that the group of friends were gentle and kind and explained things, forgiving him for the past person he was and embracing for the person he was trying to become.

Finding those kind of people can feel hard. Being yourself can be terrifying. But...

I remember at a show I was in, we were all laughing and making many D&D and other nerdy references. A cast member was v quiet. When asked what's wrong, he blurted out, "you're the kinds of people I used to beat up in school. Now I feel like the loser for not knowing what you're talking about."

Seek out people who are kind. Look for people you admire, people you feel comfortable being yourself around, people who share your passions and the things you care about.

I hear you on how experiences can make you withdraw and feel unable to lean into being your authentic self. Being earnest is being vulnerable, and being vulnerable means it's easy to get hurt.

Everyone tries to tell you apathy is cool, but the sooner you learn earnestness is strength not cringe and that all your quirks are what people will fall in love with, the sooner learn how to define your own happiness and find true friends who love youf for you
