The 1975 - The 1975
They polarise (or rather, Matty Healy does), but they’re one of the most significant bands of the 2010s. This is an incredibly strong debut (even if I do prefer their later generic meanderings) and basically a fun pop-rock album.

James Blake - James Blake
Like with a lot of groundbreaking music, it took me a while to really understand what on Earth I was listening to. Hugely influential and, along with another 2011 debut, The Weeknd‘s House of Balloons, it basically set the tone for the rest of the decade.

Alt-J - An Awesome Wave
Came out of nowhere (for me, at least) and completely blew me away. They were briefly my favourite band on the planet, but unfortunately their subsequent albums never lived up to this debut. But what a debut it was. Hey Taro!

1. Nirvana - In Utero
Hearing this at 13 was intense. I was dealing with my own alienation and there's this world-famous guy basically saying "I'm not ok with all this either". Irrespective of the tragedy that followed, I still love this angry monster of an album.

Grandbrothers - Elsewhere
(2025, neoclassical/electronic)
New Grandbrothers album! Absolutely superb.

3. Tindersticks - Tindersticks
Lacks the anger of In Utero or swagger of Suede but makes up for it with sheer pathos. A brooding Heathcliff of a record, sitting at the bar with red-rimmed eyes, nursing its third Old Fashioned and wondering where it all went wrong.

7. Pearl Jam - Vs
I‘d almost forgotten how massive this was, but it was the fastest-selling album ever at the time (and certainly the only xmas present I really wanted). Still holds up, Rearviewmirror and Elderly Woman are among their best songs.

9. Orbital - Orbital II
My tape of this (that didn’t include Planet Of The Shapes for some reason) made the round at my sixth form, and the copy was extremely worn-out by the end. The tunes still sounded brilliant, though.

10. U2 - Zooropa
Bit of an aberration in their back catalogue but I still love U2‘s foray into art rock, when they simply threw caution to the wind. I was really excited about this album as a teenager & it definitely shaped my sense of what music can be.

13. New Order - Republic
I only found out recently that this was produced by Stephen Hague, which makes sense because he’s a genuine master. Anyway, Regret and World (The Price Of Love) are the highlights here.

The Shins - Oh, Inverted World
Another contender, and I didn't actually realise this was their first album. Heralded indie rock moving from the brasher aspects of alt-rock towards a more nuanced, introverted sound (see also Death Cab For Cutie, the Microphones, etc).

A Silver Mt. Zion - He Has Left Us Alone But Shafts Of Lights Sometimes Grace The Corner Of Our Rooms...
I sometimes find it difficult to consider this a debut, since they're effectively a continuation of GYBE, but the sound is definitely different: less brash, more mournful.

The Libertines - Up The Bracket
Easy to forget but the hype was immense at the time. Justified, too. A defining album of the garage rock revival era and one of the most important British rock albums of the early 00s. Will definitely make my list.

Nation of Language - Introduction, Presence
WHY DID I WAIT FIVE YEARS TO LISTEN TO THIS ALBUM? I really am a wally. Anyway, it's superb.
