In my new article, I suggest that we need a historically situated political economy perspective to understand the mainstreaming of the far-right - I show this via an analysis of the post-Brexit border regime in Britain: academic.oup.com/ips/article/...
Coloniality, Race, and Europeanness: Britain’s Borders after Brexit
Abstract. The scholarship on the politics of immigration often frames governments’ responses to far-right mobilization as a return to border closures and a

The latest @sociologicalreview.bsky.social Magazine issue is out and it’s about ‘Waste’. It offers a range of reflections on waste, wasting away, and wasted lives, thinking about gender, race and capitalism.
Wasted goods, wasted lives: our #TSRWaste issue, edited by @asiyaislam.bsky.social , draws on thinkers from Françoise Vergès to Zygmunt Bauman to take a closer look at food apps, sanitation workers and fishing communities, floods of fast fashion in Ghana, and much more.

Amit Balmiki on the interlinkage of caste-deskilling-tourism-migration in Pokhara/Nepal: "many of the traditional waste workers ...'migrated to other countries, mostly Saudi Arabia and other countries, in search of better livelihoods. That is why we started working as sweepers.'”
Caste aside: the Gandharva community – once the performing artists of Nepal – now carry out the stigmatised job of cleaning up in the tourism capital of Pokhara.

Amit Balmiki reflects on caste, deskilling and identity loss in our #TSRWaste issue.
