The NYC Department of Correction is extremely serious about projecting an image of reform, lawfulness, and considered, sober judgment these days, so it has decided to rename its Lower Manhattan jail complex after... multiply disgraced criminal Bernie Kerik.

The Lower Manhattan jail facility briefly bore Kerik's name once before, until he was convicted of corruption.

Federal judge: you will not stop reporters from being close enough to report

Sheriff Dart: Those rules are only for the feds. The only reporters WE recognize are the ones who sell our dog/pizza/chess stories

Not sure why Tom Dart is enforcing Broadview's arguably unconstitutional executive order but he and the State's Attorney are making some interesting choices these days regarding both immigration and protest of federal abuse

earlier this morning, cook county sheriff’s deputies kicked me and a couple other reporters who were standing by ourselves off a public sidewalk because it wasn’t “free speech” hours yet or something idk.

Shout out to the journalists and historians of Chicago's policing practices and jails! At least one federal judge has read your stuff!

Perry: "Chicago's history of strained policing community relations is extremely well documented, but also fairly nuanced. It's something I think state and local authorities understand extremely well, and it can be hard for federal authorities, and certainly those from Texas, to appreciate."

feds have been all over chicagoland today.

reports of people abducted from back of the yards, cicero, rogers park, hermosa, barrington, batavia, and bridgeview.

feds are out in force in aurora. not sharing video, but residents have likewise turned out in force—and they aren't happy.

I’m not autistic, just a parent to an autistic kid w/ fairly significant support needs, but I personally find it very frustrating to see so many people fixated on preventing, reducing, or “curing” autism and neurodiversity instead of talking about inclusion + getting folks whatever support they need

Enjoyed this episode and I second @jamellebouie.net's recommendation at the end of Andy Horowitz's Katrina: A History, 1915-2015
Bouie: Sure. We’re well past the Hurricane Katrina anniversary, but in anticipation of it, I read a book that had been on my list for a long time, which is, “Katrina: A History, 1915-2015,” by Andy Horowitz. It’s just a wonderful history, not simply of New Orleans, but of Louisiana and the Gulf Coast.

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

⇨ Get ready for #UHA2025LA!

We're writing to introduce our #socialmedia volunteers, who will be roaming the conference and sharing updates via the Urban History Association's social media accounts on #BlueSky @urbanhistorya.bsky.social and #Instagram [@urbanhistoryassociation]
Conference banner reads in white text "METROPOLITAN MAJORITIES: The Eleventh Biennial Urban History Association Conference" and the logo of the Urban History Association appears beneath. Text is set on a light blue background, beneath which lies a cropped image of the San Gabriel Mountains in Los Angeles at sunset.

It happened. Last night I was feeling despair about a lot of different things and I realized I needed to enlist my dog’s help to make me feel better.

I present to you Maggie the Pug as Cher Pugowitz.
Maggie the Pug is majorly, totally, butt crazy in love with Josh. She’s wearing Cher’s classic yellow plaid ensemble.

bought my 4yo a new pair of shoes because her old ones are *literally falling apart.* rhey are the EXACT same shoe as her old ones, so of course when she saw them, she cried and said "they are sad"
