Another thing decentralization is very susceptible to embrace, extend, extinguish patterns.

Should a decentralized protocol become large enough, other social media systems will import the content while keeping proprietary layers.

It’s worth pursuing but not easy and success not guaranteed.

That’s before you get to the trade offs between decentralization and user experience.

I’m a fan of the pursuit of decentralization, but it’s important to remember the people working on this are solving unsolved problems.

Earnest observation: I don’t know how you build a decentralized social platform that isn’t prohibitively expensive to host.

Even email—our“decentralized” network—has almost no new providers because running mail servers reliably is costly. Deliverability, spam filtering, uptime… all expensive

If you look at how they went about it, it's clear they built something that was technically Decentralised️TM but practically too expensive to host, so they traded in the currency of the concept in order to, effectively, build another walled garden.

I did this for about two years.

I would charge using the dryer outlet on Sunday to 90%—stretching the cord to the garage, and a regular outlet daily.

I didn’t recover the full amount over night, but over a week I’d gradually drop from 90% to 60% charge at the beginning of my day.

I hear and see your concerns. Over the weekend, a couple users hosted on Blacksky's PDS were banned from the Bluesky app and thus the Bluesky API servers. This was a weakness of our system I've been aware of and hoped we had more time to address before any kind of public incident. 1/11

I agree, but one thing to note—is that for some people exercise and healthy food do form an aggressive personal enjoyment. And they are the ones promoting it, but they don’t recognize it’s not like that for most or many people.

Education is that for me, highly enjoyable personally but not everyone.

As a fan, I’m wondering if velocity determines effectiveness so much as it qualifies it.

It may be less a cause than a prerequisite — or simply the easiest variable to isolate.
