📚 What we're reading: "Machine Learning Simulates 1,000 Years of Climate," by Madeline Reinsel, Eos.

The Deep Learning Earth System Model creates accurate short-term forecasts and can simulate a millenium of climate in less than 12 computing hours. 🖥️ 🌦️

A new awesome foundation for spatial computing! in a perfect world this would have been open shared code and data, but without commercial capital and tech, the scale and complexity, prohibit the more leisurely pace of opensource and crowdsource development

Not optimistic yet. A sustainable replacement for still plastics requires lots more R&D funding

This may be true for be life sciences and physical sciences, but many information and social scientists are still entrenched in the bad place

Our website has plenty of items on the circular bioeconomy. Once a week, we'll be shining a spotlight on an interesting case study – this item looks at a bio-based alternative to plastic, made with feedstock from industrial and agricultural side streams.

“Attribution of climate change is challenged by natural climate variability, data limitations, and model deficiencies.”

🧐That's how the Trump administration downplayed the link between human activity & climate change.

📢 Climate experts pushed back with facts.

There is a place where the Amazon meets the Andes, where forests climb the lower slopes of mountains before giving way to the mists of the cloud forests. To stand there is to feel the weight of two great worlds converging.

HUGE: The Trump administration will no longer permit any solar or wind projects on federal lands unless they produce more energy-per-acre than coal, gas or nuclear power plants.

Solar and wind literally produce less energy per acre, so simply this may just kill off any project on federal lands.

These reciprocal relationships, which develop over time through trial and error from ancestral practices, are mediated by governance principles, social norms, decision-making protocols, and intentional caretaking (i.e., management and conservation) actions. Nonprofits & academic groups have stepped up to ensure US scientists contribute to the next UN IPCC study, produce some version of the national climate assessment & move ahead with the first US nature assessment.

But it's very hard to match the resources of the federal government.
How nonprofits and academia are stepping up to salvage US climate programs
The Data Foundation, the American Geophysical Union, and a coalition of universities are scrambling to ensure that the nation accurately assesses the growing dangers of global warming.
