And then there's merlin and the hobbit films which had endings that fueled the creative fire of the fandoms better than any well wrapped up and satisfying ending could have done.

I think this is partly why big media like marvel, dc, mha are so popular as fandoms. They're mediocre and in some cases so poorly handled they're just begging to be written better.
